Well I spent three years living in a tent busking my way around the Midlands; but I was twenty something then. I did camp in between towns rather than in the middle of them though.

It was a lifestyle choice - and if I could live my life over again I’d definitely do that bit again.

The march organisers are predicting 500,000 turnout. The met police are predicting right wing counter marchers bent on causing trouble. This could be our generation's poll tax riot,

Just a bit of de-Orwellianism. What is happening today in London is not a "pro-Palestinian protest". That strange piece of terminology sounds wrong because "protest", by definition, means..."a public expression of objection, disapproval or dissent towards an idea or action, typically a political one." In other words "protests" can't be "pro" anything at all. We don't describe Gay Pride as pro-gay protest -- that would be silly. What is actually happening today is an protest against a fascist Israeli government which is committing genocide. But we aren't allowed to say that, because our Orwellian masters have deemed that if we actually express the truth about this situation, we are "anti-semitic".

Sooo, it seems the policing challenge of the day wasn't from those protesting the Israeli government's actions and our government's support but the right-wing agitators mobilised by our Home Secretary. Well done Suella.

That's a bit simplistic. The supposedly far right was more encouraged by the lack of police presence that could allow the useful idiots to possibly come by the Cenotaph and distrup things. Fortunately that never happened. To be fair the useful idiots behaved themselves and never caused any trouble. I guess the Met commissioner could be gone by Monday. Sunak would be very unwise to get rid of Suella Braverman, would could form part of a future Tory coalition.

I sincerely hope the reverse happens by Monday, the Met police did a very good job today.

Between 0.5 and 1% of the population marched today. 0.06% or less of the marchers were arrested, mostly for “hate speech”.

This is the biggest political event since the 2003 stop the war marches (with the possible exception of the reverse Brexit marches 4 or 5 years ago).

This nation has a lot of fundamentally decent people who do not like our government calling them racists

This kind of geopolitical illiteracy amongst pro Palestinian marchers about the whole issue really doesn’t help:

“In a video shared to X/Twitter, an interviewer stops the girls and asks: 'When Hamas invaded Israel on October 7, what was your initial reaction to that?'

The girl on the left, holding up a home-made sign condemning the British Government, replies: 'I don't believe they did, did they?'

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... hters.html

“Looking at her friend for reassurance, she asks: 'Hamas?' But her friend on the right replies: 'I think so?'

She continues: 'Honestly I think I need to be a bit more clued up on everything that's going on. So I feel like I'm not really qualified to answer that too well.'”

</sigh>

That's the right answer! We need for more people to acknowledge "not really qualified to answer that too well." Doesn't delegitimise her support for poor people, 40% children (it's important to highlight the kids as they are indisputably innocent), being bombed back to the stone age with the support and blessing of the British government.

Indeed, and this evening the BBC News website has changed its headline to pro-Palestinian march.

That brainless useful idiot (and possible future civil servant) being interviewed by the Daily Mail was a scream.

Sadly, the UK universities, particularly those of the redbrick variety and Cambridge, never seem to fail in being a source of useful idiocy for foreign despots and autocrats. All I can say is people need to read books and travel a bit more than to Spanish beaches.

Elsewhere, Jews and Arabs were coming to blows in suburban Melbourne recently over the torching of a pro-Palestinian burger joint named Burgertory. Nice name, pity about the proprietor.

A bit of irony in that one, on a peak oil website. Not sure I EVER read someone admitting the obvious this way.

That kind of thing could very easily be replicated here - we don't want either side to start settling scores here...
I also happen think The Met did quite well last weekend - the Police have got to keep a very tight grip....
But it must be taking loads of resources, plus GCHQ, MI5, MI6 etc......

Vortex2 wrote: 29 Oct 2023, 17:36 PS I have tried to avoid the forum recently as I knew that the anti-Israel rhetoric would be in full flow.
Really? Is antisemitism a common attitude on the island among the inhabitants? Or more of just the prepper types? Grew up rural, didn't even know what being Jewish was until I bumped into some of them at a private boys school, and then it seemed like they were no different than anyone else. Never gave it a second thought.
i went to a private school which was maybe 30% Jewish.
I also have worked with Israeli software houses in the past.
You are right : totally normal people.

As for anti-Semitism in the UK - no it has not been at all evident .. until recently.

Sadly quite a few on this forum have a more hostile opinion.
In fact I closed my original Vortex account here because I got fed up with the "kill all Israelis" rrhetoric.

Sometime I'n not sure that i should have come back with my current Vortex2 account.
