According to the Grauniad "Paul Bristow was dismissed as a ministerial aide at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology on Monday after writing to the prime minister to call for an end to hostilities between Israel and Hamas to save lives."

Unfortunately the only thing worse than a Conservative is a Labour government but that seems to be where the UK is heading.

At least the UK voters had the good sense to decline the chance of a Corbyn Labour government.

I sometimes wonder whether politicians should be chosen like the jurors in a trial instead of self selecting as a career option.

They’d get a fixed time to serve on an average income with ruthlessly strict enforcement of laws preventing any profit beyond that.

I don't thing mass Nationalisation will work as it will cost money to buy and support those industries. Some argue that a planned economy after WW2 is what led the UK being where it is now. Maybe better to follow the German CDU/SPD concept of social capitalism as a model for UK politics.

Unfortunately there are more pressing things now such as mass immigration, war in various parts of the work and climate change that are a bit more pressing. The time for social justice is probably passed now - for the UK anyway.

You mean like the rail industry, which currently operates by the government subsidising private owners? How can it cost more to remove the shareholders from the equation?

And are you aware that one of the largest "private" power companies in the UK is owned by the French government?

FWIW i think Corbyn and McDonnell should have been given a chance, I don't think they could have done any worse than Truss and Kwarteng. I really think we need a new style of politics.

Over valued share prices for one. It would cost a lot to buy out these bungling companies. Better to let them go bust and pick it up for a song. Anyway I thought the former Railtrack was now a public entity again?

Yes EDF. From a country that can actually still make the infrastructure for power generation. I think EDF is losing heaps of money on Hinckley Point C and is heavily in debt - the perils of being a state owned company is that the government can keep covering your losses. Sizewell B, in order to be British built, had to have two 600MW steam turbines from the one reactor as that was, in the 1980s, the largest steam turbine generator set that could be built in the UK.

Yes but Laurel and Hardy could have done better than Truss and Kwarteng and maybe Corbyn and McDonnell too - we will never know. Already 10% of UK tax revenue covers debt interest.
Yes there needs to be a new style of government and politics. You have to ask yourself why 50 million South Koreans can build a manufacturing economy without the EU 'free market' but 65 million British plus a load of illegal immigrants cannot. It will take a lot of hard work which I think the British are no longer capable of.

David Cameron appointed Foreign Secretary from outside of politics?

What the F--k? The optics are terrible. This sends the message that Sunak believes there is nobody in the parliamentary tory party -- in either the Commons or the Lords -- who is competent enough for high political office.

I wonder what odds you could have got yesterday on Cameron replacing Cleverly at the Foreign Office.

Braverman had it coming - maybe even part of a plan to become leader after the next GE ?
They're all egotists that think they can do better themselves...
That's why they all want a turn at the big job....

Interesting bringing Cameron back from the dead.....
He's not elected, but can be appointed to such a high office ?
Also signals a total u-turn on Brexit - as Foreign Secretary he'll be first point of contact for the EU....
A penny for BoJo's thoughts today...., I guess tune into GB News....
