Conservative party/opposition watch

What can we do to change the minds of decision makers and people in general to actually do something about preparing for the forthcoming economic/energy crises (the ones after this one!)?

Typical socialist. HE MADE THE MONEY. IT WAS HIS. He was trying to keep more of it, as EVERYONE does.
He could have distributed it in the BVi. The UK tax payer would have got zero. But to grease his political career, he did through Gibralter which made a UK payment essential.

A socialist government is on its way. Enjoy. Probably will have to go cap in hand to the IMF again.

So how much did he steal? Will you be reporting theft to the police? Getting a crime reference number?

I do not fiddle my taxes, I arrange my taxes as to attract the least amount of tax demand. How much extra tax do you voluntarily pay?

Hopelessly confused. We did not go to the IMF with Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng.

Anyway, whilst you're out today, have a look for a well dressed person, maybe driving a nice car and throw them to the floor, put your boot on their head, take out their wallet and remove the cash. Then reassure yourself that YOU know far more deserving people who need your newly acquired taken by force cash.

So working and earning are now shameless? Submitting a tax return for scrutiny is mendaciuos?

Such chaotic thinking allowed a twice convicted male rapist with a penis to serve his sentence in a woman's jail.

I should probably mention I also support huge leaps in whataboutery and ludicrous misinterpretation. I didn't waste my time at The School For Scoundrels, took it all in!

Mr Zahawi's HMRC settlement is reportedly an estimated £4.8m, including a 30% penalty of around £1m.
To me, that's theft from the public purse...., whilst in post as Chancellor of the Exchequer....
To you, he was merely arranging his taxes as to attract the least amount of tax demand...

That's without his 'vagueness' on the number of shares he holds/sold in YouGov....?
Or what Gulf Keystone Petroleum were paying him £210,000/yr for whilst he was supposed to be working as an MP...?
Or setting up Warren Medical, 5 months before he was was appointed as vaccines minister at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic...?
Or how he amassed his massive property empire....?

You admire this kind of stuff...., but if he'd been claiming too much benefit, you'd be purple with rage....
I think it's the reason that there isn't enough money in the pot for the NHS, Social Care, Roads, Defence, Education, Public Transport etc.

I think it all can be summed up by one word - kleptocracy.

According to wikipedia "Kleptocracy is a government whose corrupt leaders use political power to expropriate the wealth of the people and land they govern, typically by embezzling or misappropriating government funds at the expense of the wider population."

That's where we ideologically differ.
You think when your neighbour makes money, if he doesn't give it to the taxman, it's theft. It is not. It is his money. His duty is to record all his income, submit it to the taxman and let them adjudicate.
Homebrew, ISA's, premium bonds are all theft if we use your ideology.

But you know all this because it is on the public record. Shows that with a free press, disclosure rules, opposition parties etc, this stuff is made public. Shows the system is fair and accessible to all, except socialists who always need to take other peoples money by force.
Mark wrote: 02 Feb 2023, 21:02 Or how he amassed his massive property empire....?
Probably the same way as i got my property empire. Go to a bank, ask for a loan, they mouse click the currency into a loan, you buy a wreck of a house, and after work (and paye) you go home , have your tea, and then go and start building/plastering/plumbing, until midnight. Hard work but it's worth it. Until a socialist comes along and says,
"You've got more than me, give me some of yours"
Mark wrote: 02 Feb 2023, 21:02 You admire this kind of stuff...., but if he'd been claiming too much benefit, you'd be purple with rage....
You've just made that up. We have had this debate before. As someone whose family members, aunts and uncles etc, where on benefits I have witnessed first hand how they destroy lives and futures. Benefits are immoral, dehumanising, takes away the meaning of life in the Aristotle sense. In a civilised society they should be replaced by workfare.

No the reason is the government is piss poor at running things. Remember, if the government solely supplied tins of baked beans, they would be £50 a tin. Retiring at 50, sick leave up to a year, golden pensions, period officers, menopause officers, diversity officers, disability access specialist, points based promotion systems, conferences, etc etc etc...........

Thank goodness for the private sector selling beans at 38p (Lidl)

Nice little philosophical comfort blanket. Next door neighbour has a lovely new car. He has only got it because he stole it from others. That's better, snuggle up to that blanket.

I would say that I'm about half way between Mark and Stumuz here.

I'm trying to work out how to keep what I regard as our family farm in the family when my wife and I die. My two children "enjoyed" a free but hard upbringing without the benefit of central heating, draught proofing, baths and showers so that we could build our eco house on the land that we had bought. We weren't "lucky" as so many people say. We went without to achieve what we have now got but with current taxation my children are likely to have to sell the farm to pay the tax. The current value is probably just sub £1 million which a few decades ago would have bought a medium sized estate but taxation hasn't been allowed to keep pace with inflation in property prices.

The ultra rich, who use the major accountancy firms, can arrange their tax and ownership affairs to avoid most of the taxation that the rest of us end up paying because most taxation legislation is actually written by the major accountancy firms with loopholes that their clients can avail themselves of. So an extra tax burden falls on the "middle classes" because the ultra rich aren't paying their fair share. The ultra rich also tend to be the people who employ others on wages which aren't enough to live properly. The ultra rich also tend to be the ones who bribe MPs and civil servants to arrange matters for their own benefit at the expense of us plebs.

I am all in favour of people keeping most of what they earn but when some people acquire rather than they earn vast sums of money and avoid paying a fair share of taxation something has to be done because money has to flow through the economic system for it to work.

Liz Truss returns - and it could be trouble for Rishi Sunak

Pilloried around the country, and the world, Ms Truss wants to tell her side of the story - to explain what really happened, "not the fairytales", as one ally puts it.

It's worth noting that she's doing so in her own words in the Sunday Telegraph
I can't wait. No, seriously, this is going to be something special.

Yup. We should ALL pay the same percentage of taxation on earnings. That isn't how things are set up. I would also like to see the definition of a corporation revisited.

Probably not much to pay, £500k allowance. But if you (or your wife) live for another 7 years when you can gift the whole place to your children now to avoid any inheritance tax. Thinking a little wider, you might be able to transfer all/most of the land into a SIPP, again no inheritance tax on SIPP. Is your property eligible for Agricultural Relief?
