Conservative party/opposition watch

What can we do to change the minds of decision makers and people in general to actually do something about preparing for the forthcoming economic/energy crises (the ones after this one!)?

They've already done mega economic damage, but they can do an awful lot more in 2 years...
This was always the Tories 'trump card' at election time, but that's totally gone now....
With BoJo, the next 2 years would be spent on him and his various misdemeanors...
Highly entertaining on Have I Got News For You, but surely this country is worth more than good comedy ??

We all know that those at the bottom will suffer most..... to repeat - don't be poor, don't be sick, don't be a student, don't be old, don't be cold, don't be disabled, don't be hungry, don't be struggling with your rent...

Historians will be scratching their heads over all this for a very long time.
I think that ultimately the problem is our electoral system. Without FPTP, recent political history would be very different. Which means Starmer's rejection of it, even though his party is clearly in support of it, might just be his undoing.

Sunday Times is reporting Sunak and Johnson are to meet. Please don't tell me we are going to end up with Johnson back as PM and Sunak as chancellor. If so, then the tories will never be forgiven for inflicting Truss on the country. Completely pointless act of national self-destruction.

Oh dear. Oh dear. Oh dear. What a mess. Those frequent changes in prime ministership is looking a bit like Australia 2010 to 2019 with a total of 6.

Perhaps in the heat of the resignation people have forgotten that it was not just Liz Truss who got the UK to where they are now. Most governments have run deficits in the last 40 years. Poor diplomacy with the EU and to a lesser extent the US regarding trade and financial flows. Did anyone mention energy policy?

The country will need to do a lot of belt tightening in the next few years.

The way in which one of the Chinese old guard member recently was gently lifted out of his seat and led away might have been applied to Liz Truss and saved the country a lot of bother. Perhaps during the audience with King Charles a special squad should be given the task of being ready to carry them away and have the next PM made ready.

Boring personalities trivia aside, what do we think will be hit hardest in the new currency cold shower about to hit the economy by a new Sunak/Boris/Labour gov'?

1/ Defence (eg keeping nuclear deterrents)
2/ Benefits ( eg non contributors always the easy target)
3/ Education (eg no more Mickey mouse degrees funded by the taxpayer)
4/ Pensions (eg raising retirement age)
5/ Or trying to tax the wealthy (eg equity property taxes) serious money will be out of the country double quick time.

Very true, most people are quite myopic in the blame mongering.
Was it the comprehensive system, Brown starting QE, ignoring democracy?

What a day it's been for the conservatives, Johnson rules himself out leaving many tory MPs who publicly backed him looking, frankly, idiotic - many of them specifically rejecting him just a few months ago especially Nadhim Zahawi. What a mess.

Thing is, it was obvious to anyone with eyes that Johnson wasn't about to get 100 MPs supporting him - so why the pantomime?

Johnson has always been the ultimate narcissist. Everything he has ever done has been to enlarge his own ego. That is all.

LOL - Priti Patel was backing Boris over the weekend, and now has switched sides to back Sunak. You'd think she'd have kept that one quiet......makes here look like she's just going to back the one that's going to win...

And them bananas,
Discussing highly a transportable food group particularly favoured by the old and the young ( in the EU a banana is not a fruit) is beyond your abilities Mark.

Sunak's coronation announced by Graham Brady to banging on tables - ra, ra, ra...
BoJo's supporters won't forget how he arranged the coup against him - the Tories are doomed from this day forward....
To avoid a GE now, regardless of how poor Tory performance would be, is an assault on our democratic institutions....

Maybe, maybe not, but I can highly recommend this book by Mike Berners-Lee (brother of Tim)
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/723 ... re-bananas

You're just sore that Boris couldn't get to 100, and Sunak gets the top job....
As you're already said, he's not to your taste, and as has already been shown, he's also not to the taste of the 160,000 paid-up faithful...
The civil war will continue.....

Large section of the tory membership will be very p*ssed off. A brown PM who stabbed Johnson in the back, and they didn't get a chance to vote against him.
