Presumably the person with the most nominations will win. But it won't happen. At least 100 tory MPs will nominate Sunak, IMO.automaticearth2 wrote: ↑21 Oct 2022, 12:14 Probably a bit of a long shot, but does anyone have any idea what would would happen if none of the runners get the 100 MPs required?

Re: Conservative government watch
Apparently Johnson already has already got 50 nominations. If he gets the 100 then the membership will put him back in Downing Street. I think it will end very badly for the tories if that happens. Johnson has a great deal of appeal in a certain limited political demographic, but outside of that demographic the idea of him returning as PM is horrific. He undermined the credibility of British politics as a whole. Bringing him back undermines it even more.

Do you mean the thick racist ones? Usual descriptions from a certain part of the media and commentary.UndercoverElephant wrote: ↑21 Oct 2022, 14:48 Johnson has a great deal of appeal in a certain limited political demographic,
I know the hatred is quite breathtaking. But we are segregating into more and more divisive camps by the day. It doesn't have to be this way.UndercoverElephant wrote: ↑21 Oct 2022, 14:48 but outside of that demographic the idea of him returning as PM is horrific.
By giving effect to the biggest transfer of political power in 500 years? No government has EVER asked its citizens THEIR opinion on the future journey of their country. Certain low grade politicians in concert with biased journalists did their utmost to frustrate the decision. Boris Johnson got it done and THEN won a thumping majority.UndercoverElephant wrote: ↑21 Oct 2022, 14:48 He undermined the credibility of British politics as a whole. Re: Conservative government watch
No. He already had a fan club before then. It basically comes down to whether you think standards of behaviour matter much. The people who like Johnson don't care what happened in Downing Street during lockdown, or whether or not Johnson should have promoted a person with a track record of making unwanted sexual advances. They don't see it as a dealbreaker.
Johnson won a thumping majority for one simple reason: Jeremy Corbyn was unable to resist internal pressure from within the Labour Party to betray Labour's leave vote by backing a second referendum. He knew it would be a disastrous mistake, but there were too many people in the Labour movement who had convinced themselves that the first referendum somehow wasn't legitimate, and he didn't have political leverage to stop it. That is why Johnson won the "red wall", and in those seats he does at least get some credit for getting brexit done. To what extent that will affect future voting behaviour is not clear. Brexit has been done now, so he would have to find some other way to retain those voters. No government has EVER asked its citizens THEIR opinion on the future journey of their country. Bookies are clearly favouring Sunak, 7/10 (70% returns in a week!) against Johnson 2/1 (treble your money in a week!).

I wouldn't be surprised if he's the only one to get the 100 nominations.

Re: Conservative government watch
I voted for Sunak in the Conservative Party election.
He clearly has a better intellect than Truss.
That said, I wasn't surprised Truss won.
1. Sunak isn't from around here.
2. His wife doesn't seem very loyal to the UK with her unusual financial practices.
3. Sunak himself might have the ability to leave the UK if things got really bad.

Re: Conservative government watch
As in he actually has an intellect, whereas Truss has the intellectual capacity of a lettuce.
Given the choice on offer, he looks like the obvious best bet to me. Putting Johnson back in would be a joke, and Mordaunt is untested in high office (if she's capable of being a good PM, why has she been overlooked for so long?). And it doesn't look like anybody else is in the running.

Re: Conservative government watch
Sunak has been publicly backed by over 100 mps, without actually declaring that he is standing, including many big hitters and previous Johnson backers.
Johnson could still be next pm if he gets more mp votes than Mourdant.
I can see tactical voting being employed to keep Johnson off the ticket.

Re: Conservative government watch
BBC is reporting Johnson has got the 100 nominations. If true we are looking at the membership choosing between Sunak and Johnson, and Johnson may very well win that. If so, this unbelievable shitshow will continue and the rest of the world will look on in utter astonishment.
What might stop it is a significant number of tory MPs declaring that they will resign and trigger by-elections if Johnson is re-instated.

Re: Conservative government watch
You couldn't make it up, BoJo returns triumphantly after more lying than anyone has ever seen? Surely this can't happen. If he gets voted back in by the members, exonerated albeit indirectly in the process, his dishonesty will reach new levels. People must be watching this with baited breath irrespective of their preferences or nationality, we could look like a laughing stock here.

Re: Conservative government watch
To me, it's looking increasingly like Sunak vrs Johnson.
Johnson gets an easy win if this choice is put to the 160,000 Tory Members, who are YET AGAIN deciding the future of the country....
So, Johnson is PM again by next Friday ?
He then has to form a Cabinet - but nearly every vaguely sensible Tory resigned from his last one.....
So we get a rehash of the same old failed sh*te - Jacob Rees-Mogg as Chancellor, Priti Patel back as Home Secretary, Nadine Dorries as Foreign Secretary, plus a load of unknown back benchers filling all the other slots....
As soon as the ink is dry, BoJo is then up in front of the Parliamentary Privileges and Standards Committee, which will probably find him guilty....
What a total sh*t show.
The Tories are going to be decimated when we do eventually get an election....
The Russians, the Chinese, the French, the Germans and even the Nigerians are laughing their c*cks off.

Johnson led tory death spiral; what's not to like apart from the collateral damage?
