We had very high river levels recently. I took the drone out for a fly and was interesting to see how the flood water moves around and especially where the previous river course(es) was(were).

Another two metres higher and my house would have flooded but that would have been higher than anything recorded. Reservoirs feeding into the river's tributaries are now also nearly full now. The weather does seem to have been very rainy in the last year. Everything is now green and soils totally sodden.

I am surprised by the tendency simply to pile up everything from flooded houses outside to be thrown away. I sure that a lot of things that do not contain electronics are recoverable after a wash with clean water and dry off.

Most modern furniture is made from some form of chipboard and so falls apart after a soaking and also most flood water contains significant amounts of sewage so would need more than a wash.

Point taken on the chipboard furniture. Maybe a good soaking with bleach solution could help other things like mats, clothes, metal items e.g. kitchen objects etc. Good to see the kitchen 'word blocker' has been removed once the spammer went away.

EDIT to add that later reports state "at least 25 lives lost" That death toll is unprecedented in the area. Large scale power failures reported. More rain expected.

Is Kentucky one of those US States which has legislated to ban references to Climate Change or Global Warming? It's a good job that Trump isn't still in charge or they would have got no help from the government at all. Trump would see it as "just another heavy shower!"

The death toll in the ongoing Kentucky flood disaster is now reported as "dozens" and with "hundreds" still missing.

The flood disaster in Pakistan is reported to be much worse than the usual monsoon floods.
The death toll is not known accurately but is feared to be over 1,000 so far with more rain expected.

The Pakistan floods are crazy. That we're seeing these kind of impacts at +1.2°C warming and our absolute best case, if everything goes well (which it isn't) is for probably double this amount, we're in trouble. Impacts are non-linear with warming.

But government economists are telling government that we must and will have smooth growth into the future, Chris. All government policy is based on achieving this.

People like Nicholas Stern are trying to tell them that we face a bumpy ride down the roller coaster of life unless we do something drastic to prevent drastic climate change but that drastic change would involve the rich getting poorer so there is no chance of any significant change.

We are doomed by government, any government, to climate disaster unless we get economic disaster first. We can but hope.

This, sadly, will happen again and again all over the world and will get worse as the temperature rises. The only way we will reduce this death toll will be to move people out of flood zones, and well above any predicted flood levels. How do you do that in a country like Pakistan?

So far in Pakistan we have 1,500 dead and 33 million people impacted out of a population of 220 million.
Suspect the flood plains will be the most fertile areas, so some will return, until the next massive flood event happens...
Others will head to the big cities and become destitute, and some will soon be on rubber rings on the channel....

It's sad to see what is happening in Pakistan. I understand the UK has given them some money. Quite probable that the alluvial flood plains are the most badly affected.

Some flooding in Central Italy has also been reported.

Whether all this flooding is more than average I could not say. I don't recall hearing of such large scale flooding in Pakistan before.
I would also like to know the source of the this flood water. Is it from melting glaciers or snow or large rainfalls?
