Is Solar Power going to give the UK the energy it needs for the 21st century?

Russian missile strikes Ukraine solar farm

Post by BritDownUnder »

It had to happen sometime. After all they have to increase their market for gas.

According to this article the solar farm continued working... mostly. A hit on the transformer or inverter may have been different. One presumes that solar farms are actually quite resilient if you hit the panels as they are probably wired with about groups of 30 panels wired in series and different groups wired in parallel. Knocking out one group of panels would probably not affect any other group.
The safety of Ukraine’s many nuclear power plants has been a focus of major concern during the ongoing Russian invasion, but photos and video making the rounds on social media this week show that renewables, too, have come under attack.

The images, some of them shared above, show a solar farm in eastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region that was struck by a missile over the weekend, leaving hundreds of smashed panels and a massive crater between two module rows.
Note that Reuters say it is artillery damage and not a missile.

Nice photo of the damage.

Those panels out there are a lot safer than those on a roof somewhere. Russians don't seem to like Ukrainian buildings with roof on. I don't think that Russia is attacking solar farms in particular. They're just another Ukrainian asset to be destroyed.

For some reason the US is worried about Ukraine damaging anything in Russia when Russia is absolutely and deliberately attacking anything of value in Ukraine. There is good reason to deprive all Russian oligarchs of their assets and turning them over to Ukraine when all this is over.

Soviet ex-military author Viktor Suvorov (not his real name) mentions Ukraine's soil as "so rich you could spread it on bread". Apparently he had to join the military when he lost his farm having spread the wrong kind of fertiliser (too concentrated iIrc) on it, killing everything for years, as well as his livelihood.
The book - written decades ago - was called "The Liberators". And yes he was being ironic.
