If course not. Putin believes he has the right to choose who rules Ukraine, rather than the Ukrainian people having any right to democratic self-determination. The Ukrainians don't agree, so he decided to invade, wrongly believing the country he was invading wouldn't put up much of a fight. Possibly the worst strategic military mistake since Hitler decided to invade Russia.Default0ptions wrote: ↑17 Apr 2022, 15:26So the invasion was not purposeless then?

Re: Ukraine Watch...
Occasionally the UN says it can but it didn't in this case.
Putin has publicly said that he wants to re-establish the Soviet/Russian Empire as it once was. His invasion was the first stage of that. Also having a free and more prosperous country, one that has close family relationships with Russia, on his doorstep would be extremely embarrassing and something that he couldn't countenance. That is why he invaded.
Anything about NATO or Ukraine readying itself to invade Russia is absolute rubbish, pure BS. And as for protecting the rights of Russian speakers in the Donbas they wouldn't be under attack if Russian troops hadn't gone in and fomented the succession.
Putin has put back any thoughts of the amalgamation of the two countries by several generations by his completely unprovoked invasion and genocidal war. He has also spread the desire to belong to NATO to every country in the western world with a border with Russia by his threats and bullying.
He has single handedly destroyed any credibility that Russia might have had. In valid, Defalt0ptions and Vortex can splutter all they want but it won't change many people's opinions on this Soviet style war of aggression by Putin.
And as for Vortex saying that he didn't vote for the action against Russia, the British public like nothing more than a David and Goliath fight where David is winning and with Russia taking the role of Goliath I would think that the vast majority of people in this country fully support any action, and probably more than we are currently taking, on behalf of the Ukrainian people.

In this case, Ukraine was generally minding its own business and posed no threat to Russia.Default0ptions wrote: ↑17 Apr 2022, 15:22 So tell me; is one sovereign country allowed to invade another?
As we know, Russia had already invaded and occupied a chunk of Ukraine in 2014 - they just thought they could get away with taking more...
Unfortunately for them, it's not going as they planned...
As to your existential question - looking back in history, invading other countries is as old as history itself....
Everyone has done it at some time from the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Vikings, Mongols, Ottomans, Chinese, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, British, French, Russians, Chileans, Germans, Americans, Japanese, Argentinians, Iraqis, and loads more....
That doesn't make any of them right, which is why the UN was set up after WWII to try and prevent future wars by diplomatic means.
Unfortunately the UN has failed to work time and time again, and they've been totally invisible in this conflict..
If we can manage to end this war without nuclear conflict, I think the UN needs a total overhaul...
The veto of the 5 permanent members of the Security Council seems particularly outdated...
Sanctions should be a majority vote (80% ?) and implemented by all members.

It's called a war of aggression.
Re: Ukraine Watch...
So Putin's purpose was to illegally invade and then surrender?

Putin's purpose is now genocide in revenge for making him look not just weak but stupid as well.

No sovereign country can ever be allowed to invade another? It’s a simple question.Stumuz2 wrote: ↑17 Apr 2022, 18:19No.Default0ptions wrote: ↑17 Apr 2022, 15:22

Okay, so we’ve established that the invasion was carried out for some reason or other.
It doesn’t matter what you or anyone else claims those reasons might be - unless the actual reasons that Russia felt necessitated the invasion are addressed, the war will continue until one side or other accepts defeat or a peaceful solution is found.

True. We have no idea what his actual motivation is, it's just as likely to be economical as political. Information coming from Russia can't be trusted, Putin lies all the time, and information coming from Ukraine is highly likely to be just as unreliable.Default0ptions wrote: ↑17 Apr 2022, 20:26 Okay, so we’ve established that the invasion was carried out for some reason or other.

Ukraine is currently a melting pot, Putin supplies the tanks and Nato supplies the fuel.

... And has been arming Ukraine with billions of pounds worth of weaponry ever since 2014. This is, in no way, a David vs. Goliath fight.
Re: Ukraine Watch...
& what happened in 2014....., oh yes, Russia invaded Crimea...
If Russia hadn't, then I suspect most people would only have a vague idea about Ukraine...
Russia only has itself to blame for this mess....

I can’t speak for any others and I’m not trying to change anyone’s opinion. In valid, Defalt0ptions and Vortex can splutter all they want but it won't change many people's opinions on this Soviet style war of aggression by Putin.
I’m simply saying that it’s not a black and white situation and that people’s opinions don’t make any difference.
Unless whatever reasons that made Russia feel that it had no option left other than to invade are addressed, the situation will remain unresolved.
I’m not saying that those reasons are justified, or are right or are wrong.
Neither Russia, nor the rest of the world cares about what you think.
But unless the reasons that Russia felt were serious enough to cause them to invade Ukraine are seriously addressed, there will be no resolution to this.
You’re welcome to hold and share any opinions you like. But your opinions are just totally irrelevant to the real politik of the situation; and dangerously so.

This statement is true of all wars, at all times. Everything else you wrote is unconnected to this fact.Default0ptions wrote: ↑17 Apr 2022, 20:26 the war will continue until one side or other accepts defeat or a peaceful solution is found.

Re: Ukraine Watch...
Well, it's not as much of a David vs Goliath fight as Putin expected it to be, let's put it that way.
