Ukraine grain production estimated to decline by a third this year, as winter wheat cannot be harvested and summer wheat cannot be planted in the war zone.

What percentage do they normally export?

I read that Russia and Ukraine supply about a third of the worlds grain export market. They supply most of the Middle East as well as other countries. Frightening!

Russian supplies will get through because I doubt that anyone who is reliant on them for food is going to boycott them but Russia is blockading Ukrainian Black Sea ports so nothing is going to come out of Ukraine that way even if they manage to harvest it. Ukraine could make some propaganda gains if Russia does prevent them supplying their usual customers. No one is going to support a country which is starving its people.

The rule now extends to Russian citizens in Ukraine, those with a “close relation” to Russia, and Ukrainians who publicly support or ignore Moscow’s ongoing military operation.

Annexation of property is not a way to make friends, but as a response to brutal war which is destroying your cities and killing thousands of your citizens and blocking your main exports etc., it is understandable.

More seriously, this war didn't come from nowhere.
The Ukrainian Azov Battalion have been fighting Russian separatists for years .. and these Azov types are in fact quasi-Nazis.
Neither side is squeaky clean- and both sides have been armed and fighting for ages.

Whilst neither side is entirely blameless, it is hard to ignore the basic fact that Ukraine was invaded and that Russia was doing the invading.

I suspect that hatred will persist long after the war. As an example, when I was a child I knew at least two men who saw nothing wrong in killing Germans, twenty years and more after the war. One of whom remarked that only street lighting and an effective police force prevented this. Both regretted handing in weapons captured from German troops.

Nothing is simple. We invaded France in Operation Overlord. The Normandy Landings. We had good reason to. My point is that there can be ‘justified’ invasions.

We invaded Iraq. “Colin Powell’s UN speech: a decisive moment in undermining US credibility”.

My point is that there can be unjustified invasions - that we pushed for on ‘sexed up’ nonsense. You can’t just pick an invader and invaded and make your case on that alone.

The mere fact of invasion can sometimes be wrong and sometimes right.

Here's a graph of wheat exports (not total wheat production by country, China is the biggest there by a long shot, followed by India).



Not how Russia's exports have gone up a lot as indeed has their overall production in the last 10 years. Due to climate vagaries Australia's goes up and down. Australia's domestic use is about 8 million tonnes pa.
