That the thing, Stu. They don't have to pay for it yet as they can't pay for it through the banking system. As long as Russia continues pumping they can use it with a promise to pay later.

It should have been sorted out at that time.

The public should be made aware of the back story.
It was sorted, when Ukraine gave up their nuclear deterrent in return for promises that they would be respected as a sovereign country. Unfortunately, someone lied, a fact that won't be forgotten by any other countries considering scrapping nukes in future.

I hope the narrative is "Ukraine good, Putin bad." I can't see anything good in Putin now. He's a megalomaniac, psychopath of about the same level as Hitler. Judging by the way he isolates himself from his advisers he's gone even further down hill than Hitler ever went.

Russia is a country that has been subject to authoritarian, totalitarian rule for most of its existence and when put under pressure, even by the release of the internal pressure, the people seem to want to go back to the good old days when the certainty of totalitarianism gave them a bit of security. Hence the support for Putin in some circles now. I'm not sure that there is a majority support as many people are too frightened to disagree but there is some support for him just as there is some support for Lukashenko in Belarus.

There would seen to be minimal support for Russia in Ukraine judging by the numbers of refugees making the long trek across Ukraine to the west even from the eastern most, Russian speaking towns and cities.

It could be said that two lots of people lied. Both lots said that they wouldn't attack Ukraine and one lot has and both lots said that they would come to the aid of Ukraine if asked. One lot says it has come to the aid of Ukraine but wasn't asked for that aid and the other lot is only sending material aid when they have been asked for a lot more than that.

It would seem that the lot that has attacked Ukraine and says that it is coming to the aid of Ukraine hasn't even got the material to aid itself in its invasion let alone supply Ukraine with aid!

And I agree that now no country is likely to give up nukes.

A general point not mentioned:
The Russians dont seem to care about early losses.

In the Hungarian Revolution the first wave of Russians was defeated.
The Hungarians starrted partying .. and the second wave arrived ....

Grozny was similar. Huge numbers of conscript Russians died, hiding in their armoured vehicles .. which were then blown up.
The Russians however finished the job ... and I believe that 1/3rd of the Grozny inhabitants died in the two wars.

Levity is good, it relieves tension and the fear of death.

Well, there are no despots around here and no need to be afraid. Circumstances are so far out of our control it would be pointless to tread on eggshells; as the Austin Rover works driver Tony Pond once said after turning his 6R4 on its roof, "you've got to laugh, haven't you, else you'd cry"!

Pictures of Putin are popular targets for rifle practice by HM forces.
Have also seen them used as darts targets.
"PUCK FUTIN" T shirts are popular.

Local Polish farm workers burnt an effigy of Putin, and a russian flag.
A turddis has been marked "Russian Embassy"

A video circulating on line shows children dancing around the remains of a russian military vehicle.

During the LAST war, chamber pots with a picture of hitler on the inside were very popular

"West could target Russia’s gold reserves over Ukraine, says Boris Johnson"

I'm being to suspect how this mess will play out.

The West will demand 'reparations' and will seize much of Russia's gold, oil and gas resources.

Some - but not all - of this largesse will go to Ukraine for rebuilding.

Most will go to Western governments and corporations ... and individuals.

Silly me ... I should have realised that "follow the money" applies to Western intervention in Ukraine as in everything.

We'll see. The Chechens did not have access to anti tank, and it now seems anti-ship weapons, and being Muslims who embarked on kidnapping, murder and slavery did not get a lot of sympathy from the West. This one could be a bit different.

I was wondering if Ukraine could be supplied with anti-ship missiles or even torpedoes by the West.

I am happy to see Russia bleeding from a thousand cuts like in Afghanistan. This could take years unless Russia goes nuclear or chemical.

Wouldn’t they need to invade and defeat Russia first to do that?
