What is unique about it is the fact that Russia is a nuclear-armed member of the UN security council.

Those were distant hell-holes on the fringes of the modern world. Ukraine is a modern European state.

Is that code for 'white'? Syria and Iraq were both relatively successful secular countries.UndercoverElephant wrote: ↑02 Mar 2022, 15:00

It seems like you've bought all the mainstream line about Ukraine.

Re: Ukraine Watch...
Putin is, according to this article, not alone in pushing this military adventure in Ukraine. Russia's Defence Minister, Sergey Shoygu, is also a prime mover in the action having pushed the FSB and other ministries to the side.
This article points out five essential commodities for the world of which this conflict will adversely affect supply. This war and reactions to it could be the key stone which, when removed, causes the fall of the world economic edifice. Many here have said that the world economy and the civilisation reliant upon it will take decades or more to crumble. This war could mean the collapse happens within a decade.

Afghanistan could be said to have attacked the US first by being willing hosts to Al Quaida so the US was acting in self defence. Putin saying that Russia was attacked by Ukraine is stretching things a long way.UndercoverElephant wrote: ↑02 Mar 2022, 15:00Those were distant hell-holes on the fringes of the modern world. The US went into Kuwait at the behest of the legitimate Kuwaiti government which was itself ousted by an attack by a foreign government, Iraq, and the UN, . They did so with UN backing and didn't go on into Iraq as they didn't have a UN mandate to do so.

Just noticed that RT on freeview channel 234 is now unavailable. Also noticed that the website seems to be flapping up and down. I thought we were leaving RT free to broadcast?

Interesting article, thanks for posting. I think at least two of those, the last two, are nice to haves for the layperson; the worrying ones are the first two. I can see a shortage of metals leading to increased refurbishment and renewed efforts to scavenge scrap from wherever possible. Regarding the shortage of chips, the second hand electronics market could see trade boom, so plenty of jokers selling crappy smartphones on ebay then. I've been reusing old scrap laptops from work for a while now, i can get them reanimated for 40 quid.kenneal - lagger wrote: ↑02 Mar 2022, 15:26This article points out five essential commodities for the world of which this conflict will adversely affect supply. These things aren't black and white, but here's my simplistic take.....kenneal - lagger wrote: ↑02 Mar 2022, 15:38Afghanistan could be said to have attacked the US first by being willing hosts to Al Quaida so the US was acting in self defence. Grenada - defo a black mark against the US
Iraq (2nd time) - another black mark, down to George W Bush wanting to 'finish the job' of his father and to get access to their oil
Kuwait and Iraq (1st time) - as you say, a reaction to the invasion of Kuwait, but the US/UK did go into Iraq...
Afghanistan - complicated - fighting Al Qaeda and the Taliban, rather than the Afghan government
Syria - complicated - bombing ISIS, rather than the Syrian government
Sad to say, our sympathy for the civilians in all these wars was probably less, because they were mostly brown/black/muslim, rather than the eloquent white/christian ones we're now seeing in Ukraine....

Re: Ukraine Watch...
You can say that if you like, but it is total nonsense. Saddam Hussein wasn't a willing host to Al Quaeda. He saw them as a threat to his own authority.kenneal - lagger wrote: ↑02 Mar 2022, 15:38

The US invaded Iraq because they miscalculated that it would be possible to turn it into a western client oil-producing state.

Was watching Channel 4 news earlier, and they pointed out that as RT was banned across the EU, they (RT) decided to turn off here too.automaticearth2 wrote: ↑02 Mar 2022, 16:00 Just noticed that RT on freeview channel 234 is now unavailable. Actually, RT was kicked off the Astra satellite network, and that also affected the broadcast in the UK.
