And so we have come full circle. The start of the first lockdown was memorable for a completely manufactured run on toilet paper. Just as that fades into the distance, we might just get a run on toilet paper fuelled by a genuine shortage.Toilet paper and food packaging could be hit by soaring energy costs as firms restrict production to protect their finances, industry bosses have warned.
The chief of the Confederation of Paper Industries called for a “temporary winter cost containment measure” to help companies in the sector with costs going “through the roof”.

Re: Toilet paper production to be restricted!!
The first toilet paper panic was not COMPLETELY manufactured, lockdown meant more people at home and therefore using more toilet paper and purchasing more. The extra demand resulted in the odd local shortage which was then spread by panic.
The fact that LESS toilet paper was used in workplaces got forgotten.
I doubt that significant shortages will result this time, but prices will rise to reflect the greater energy cost of manufacture.

But being a good power switcher after the last loo roll panic, I evaluated the situation vis-à-vis all things botty related.
I came to the conclusion, after a quick google, that toilet paper is made from virgin wood fibers or from a combination of recycled paper pulp mixed in water with chemical sulfates to help it break down, starches that create wet strength and chemicals to make it white. Virgin fiber toilet paper is made using softwood and hardwood trees.
It is therefore very environmentally destructive. I have not done further research but can you imagine all the trees needed to wipe the bots of the world everyday?

90% reduction in loo roll use.

I've said it before: minimal toilet roll (if any) to take the thick off, then a basin of warm water and an individual cloth for each person. Toilet rolls with then last a long time and you may not even need them.
Some woofers at a friend's house asked for compost toilets and washing facilities (they brought their own cloths), which I found admirable.

Re: Toilet paper production to be restricted!!
Being a frequent traveller to Asia until recently I have seen them all.
Japan definitely had the best toilet bidets, even one on the plane going over there which was a bliss, they take it to an art form. Karma got me back on the flight back home sitting next to a stinking family though.
Myself due to either my food habit or digestive system I prefer paper and then have a good shower afterwards. The wife insisted on having a small shower attachment on a flexible hose fitted near the toilet. It has hot and cold water and a thermostatic mixer to get the right temperature. I use it occasionally along with a bit of soap if there has been a major 'malfunction'.
Those electric bidet contraptions which are probably made in China make me a bit nervous. Having an enema is one thing, having a enema with an electric shock added gives me the frights.

No electric! They work on water pressure. 10mins to fit. Doddle.BritDownUnder wrote: ↑09 Oct 2021, 10:23

On my one trip to the Middle East, Dubai, a decade or more ago most toilets had a shower attachment on the wall next to them. It mystified me at first but then it clicked what they were for.

Yes I should have taken more in. I showed the video to the wife and it was met with disapproval in the most subtle way that only wives can do.Stumuz2 wrote: ↑09 Oct 2021, 11:01No electric! They work on water pressure. 10mins to fit. Doddle.BritDownUnder wrote: ↑09 Oct 2021, 10:23

I recall being caught short once at a power station site in Indonesia at a toilet where I was busting for a number two and to my horror found there was no toilet paper only a bucket of water and a small plastic cup sized container with a side handle. No soap was evident. There was a major bowel malfunction but thankfully I had kept a serviette, possibly the biggest I had ever had, from a few nights before at a hotel in Singapore. It was duly ripped into 16 equal pieces and used on both sides and was just enough.

Yes, here is a quick video, It's the US version but the principle is the same. Just shut off the water, fit the tee piece to the cistern and fit.
