Greater Manchester publishes Clean Air Plan

All 10 Greater Manchester (GM) councils are considering the GM Clean Air Plan at meetings in July (it has already been endorsed by all 10 council leaders). It includes proposals for a GM-wide Clean Air Zone, which is anticipated to launch in May 22. The Zone aims to secure compliance with NO2 legal limits and will charge non-compliant buses, coaches, HGVs, LGVs, vans, minibuses, taxis and private hire vehicles, but not private cars....

Seems like a step in the right direction, but the aim is only to stop illegal levels of one pollutant.
Also, exempting private cars seems a bit of a cop-out when businesses will face the costs of retrofitting or replacing their vehicles.

Yes a step in the right direction, but a small step.
No reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, only an improvement in local air quality.

There might be an increase in carbon dioxide emissions as drivers of polluting vehicles take a longer route in order to avoid the clean air zone.
