The 'On The Bright Side' thread..

How will oil depletion affect the way we live? What will the economic impact be? How will agriculture change? Will we thrive or merely survive?

There will be fewer beaches (sea level rise = less landmass, therefore less coastline)
Only a bright side for those who don't like sand in their sandwiches :D

My friends will stop thinking I'm a freak and actually look up to me for my foresight.

More importantly my ex may realise that I haven't being going off in a different direction because of choice (not counting on this one - are there any good looking peak oiler ladies out there?)

SUV drivers will lose a lot of money as they won't be able to drive and they won't be able to sell their cars.

My wood burning stove (not installed yet) heated living room will be a very popular venue.

I can rent out my Brompton when I'm not using it.

With the collapse of globalisation, perhaps the disgraceful exploitation of hundreds of millions of chinese peasants will stop.

Hmm... Giant solar powered airships. Entire surface a high efficiency photovoltaic biofilm made by Shell.

Doesnt exist yet, of course, but I'd quite enjoy a leisurely 2 or 3 day trip across the Atlantic to New York... watching the sailing cargo ships go by 10.000 feet below while sipping a pint of Harveys on the observation deck. Very civilised. I've always regretted missing out on the interwar heyday of airships. Thats one technology we really should revive in a big way. If you want a heavy lifter to get stuff from A to B, I cant imagine theres anything more efficient, and another advantage is that huge runways are not required.

Mass air travel will be the first major victim on the decline side of the peak. The industry will, I guess, rapidy regress back to the state of its origins in the 1920's. Most airlines will go bankrupt and those that remain, in a much reduced form, will provide a means of travel for the super-rich only.

I used to be a member of a group that were very into airships and blimps. They saw airships as the transport of the future and so do I :)

Waterways.

Though I think there could be a place for airships in the future.

All the hard-working people in old terraced houses with chimneys will be able to get wood stoves, whilst all the upper management in gas-heated McMansions with no chimneys, and all the sponging chavs in council houses (who aren't allowed wood stoves because of the fire risk) will freeze.

Only so much spare wood to go round. Sounds like social justice to me! ;-)

I love airships too and would love to see them replace aeroplanes. I remember seeing some program about the R101 and it showed film of a man in a DJ playing a grand piano in the gondola whilst people swished around sipping martinis  Until then I thought it was just like a flying train carriage!

I also saw a programme about this http://globalskyships.com/gss5.htm which I thought was excellent, though I'm not at all impressed with its current uses...
