There is probably quite a difference in the time required based on level of dress. Sitting on a beach in swim trunks is far from a farm worker with just forearms and face exposed and the face under a hat brim.
Back to the topic for a moment.
Daily deaths in both the USA and the UK continued to decline in spite of the surge in reported cases in the USA. The US had 607/ day while the UK suffered 98/day.
The surge in US cases is over two weeks old and causing quite a bit of official panic so this weeks decline is a bit surprising. Of course it was a holiday week in the US so next Tuesday's numbers may well show a surge of deaths which is really just a reporting lag.

We will see if the elderly with health issues choose to stay out of the pubs. Some US states have a head start on this and reported case numbers are soaring with some increases in hospitalization rates but not deaths as of yet. The death rate for young /healthy people is low so even if large numbers of them get infected it might not bump up the overall death rate but I wonder about young smokers and how they will fair?PS_RalphW wrote:Reports that the opening of pups has not been met with universal social distancing. Also if a lot of asymptomatic people are out and about after going to the pub it will be harder for those older more at risk people to avoid exposure.

It's difficult to resist huddling around a lovely pup isn't it!
With the US buying the entire stock of whichever anti covid drug it was, the expensive one, luckily, they should be able to avoid some of the deaths. apparently it saves you from four extra days in hospital.
The cheaper one, which is used in the UK a lot, is in good supply, not being a branded drug, and it is more effective than the expensive one.

Nicotine consumers, notwithstanding other potential cardiovascular related comorbidities associated with smoking, have been reported as having significantly better outcomes in terms of Covid 19 as compared to non nicotine consumers. No-one as yet knows why.vtsnowedin wrote:We will see if the elderly with health issues choose to stay out of the pubs. Secondly, the WHO have formally stated, about three weeks ago, that the chance of someone who is aymptomatic passing on Covid 19 is "very low". Or, at least, the did say that.
Then, a few days later, after being lent on by several governments who have enacted emergency legislation severely restricting the freedom of movement of their citizens based on the line that asymptomatic carriers are dangerous vectors for the disease, the WHO sought to "clarify" their position on asymptomatic infection of others. Which basically amounts to the WHO doing precisely the opposite of clarification and doing, instead, every thing possible to muddy what they said so that it could be interpreted in whichever way any government wanted to interpret it.

Are you telling me that you also have incompetent jerks in charge of your government? Amazing that that has happened on both sides of the pond at the same time.Little John wrote:Nicotine consumers, notwithstanding other potential cardiovascular related comorbidities associated with smoking, have been reported as having significantly better outcomes in terms of Covid 19 as compared to non nicotine consumers. Or is it ,that is the way it usually is, and current events have brought it to our attention?

I don't think that it is incompetence that is the problem but the fact that they are governing not for the benefit of the people but for the benefit of the corporations who paid to put them where they are. They are also advised by people, the civil service in the UK as well as corporate lobbyists, who are giving advise which will benefit their corporation rather than the people.vtsnowedin wrote:..........................Are you telling me that you also have incompetent jerks in charge of your government? It is not surprising, therefore, that much of what they do is incomprehensible to us, the people, and seems entirely perverse on occasions.

People (i.e., these “anti-authoritarians, not to mention the majority of the “normal public) are not going to want to face the fact that they’ve been behaving like a bunch of fascists (or cowards) for no justifiable reason whatsoever.
So, what they are going to do instead is desperately pretend that their behavior was justified and that the propaganda they have been swallowing, and regurgitating, was not propaganda, but rather, “the Truth.
In other words, in order to avoid their shame, they are going to do everything in their power to reify the official narrative and delegitimize anyone attempting to expose it as the fiction that it is. They are going to join in with the corporate media that are calling us “extremists, “conspiracy theorists, “anti-vaxxers, and other such epithets.
They’re going to accuse those of us on the Left of aligning with “far-Right Republican militias, and “Boogaloo accelerationists, and of being members of the Russian-backed “Querfront, and assorted other horrible things meant to scare errant leftists into line.
Above all, they are going to continue to insist, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that we are “under attack by a “killer virus which could “strike again at any time, and so we have to maintain at least some level of totalitarianism and paranoia, or else … well, you know, the terrorists win.
Interesting technique - write down what's happening, but write it as a prediction so that people reading it later will think you saw it all coming and must be clever.Little John wrote:https://off-guardian.org/2020/05/21/bra ... al-part-2/

According to the news Bolsonaro has got covid. I hope he is in intensive care for the 13 or 14 weeks that others suffering from"just a little cold" have suffered. I just hope that Trump gets it next although they do say that the devil looks after his own. He obviously didn't care for Bolsanaro!
