New coronavirus in/from China

Also many businesses are posting signs refusing to take cash currently. Small shops will always take it. I guess you could always keep depositing it back in your bank to keep the bills paid - if you can find a branch. Personally, I am getting rid of a stash of old £20 bills every time I shop, and using ATMs to pull new ones. It might be hard to use the old ones soon, and if some are fake, the banks might notice.

Car parks and trails could be shut to stop people from visiting Snowdonia National Park after "unprecedented scenes" on Saturday, according to bosses.
There were so many people on mountain summits it was "impossible to maintain effective social distancing".
Same on Anglesey.clv101 wrote:. West Wales rapidly filling up with tourists!
However, strange things that I never thought I would see or hear are happening.
The local council have applied for powers to close campsites, caravan parks, and B&B's.
The leader of the council said that Anglesey has a low incidence of infection (don't know if that's true) but said if Cheshire, Manchester, and Liverpool residents come down in their usual numbers, services could come under strain.
Strange times.
Also, my local hardware store which I rely on too much, has started rationing loo rolls to one per customer. Result? Panic buying has stopped. He is getting a big increase in footfall, word is getting out they are well stocked, so an increase in profits because they are buying other stuff whilst they are in.
Think the food thing will sort itself out.
A new twist on localism.
A number of 4 x4 vehicles have arrived with, I'm assuming, covid refugees, to camping sites in Bala.
Overnight, the locals have daubed messages ' go home idiots' on their cars.

Oh tosh. The young have led warm privileged lives which has developed a dislike for real work, preferring Facebook and Instagram to the real world. They have disenfranchised themselves.UndercoverElephant wrote:Neither can I. We already had a situation where the under-30s were effectively disenfranchised, and the people who disenfranchised them are the most likely to die from the virus. Johnson is going to be forced to being in regulations telling those people that they've got to put their social lives on hold for maybe an entire year, in order to protect the boomers.clv101 wrote: I can't see how Johnson can hold the country together through this without some degree of social break down.
It is very hard to see how this resolves itself.

Just back from a walk into town to pick up some supplies for the in laws. Very quiet. No one in the local tesco extra. Same in the Co-op.
Took the opportunity to get some cash.
HSBC - both machines unable to dispense cash
TSB - requested £250. Lots of whirring and clicking (at least 30 seconds). Error message - please contact branch
Barclays - exactly the same as TSB. Tried £100 and this was dispensed. The machine then stated 'unable to dispense cash' for the next customer
Santander/Halifax - I took £100 and £50 out from each of these no trouble
Something definitely going on.

In a prior life I used to work in in anti-forgery unit in Europe.
We had huge machines we would run vast quantities of banknotes through each day to find counterfeit notes.
The machines were HUGE. When the staff took the panels off at the end of each day to clean them you could see huge piles of - err - muck which can fallen off the notes. These snowdrifts had to be vaccumed up.
I noticed that almost all the staff working directly with the machines appeared to have skin conditions ... I wonder why.
It's called panic - or at least a degree of distrust in the banking system/govt/the rest of the population.Bedrock Barney wrote:Just back from a walk into town to pick up some supplies for the in laws. Very quiet. No one in the local tesco extra. Same in the Co-op.

The cash reloaders are probably not working at full capacity or over weekends.

Significant numbers of people seem to be regarding present circumstances as an extra bank holiday.
"self isolation" seems to mean "can not work but can visit popular seaside resorts, or go hill walking in Wales"
It is only a matter of time until such visitors are fired on.

"Installers and owners of emergency diesels must assume that they will have to run for a week or more"
The banks will make a fortune out of this ..
I have just received a text from Boglys saying I have gone into overdraft and they are now charging 35% AER interest rate.
35% !!!
Sheesh .. that's daylight robbery in view of the current central bank interest rates.
Also, many/most ordinary people will be in the same position soon enough.
Time to buy shares in the banks!
