A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools - Douglas Adams.

The diagram on this page shows that the UK is about 13.5 days behind Italy.

Yep. The bulk seller of dried goods we bought our supplies from have just pulled their website - this morning. Say they are getting 60,000 orders a day, and some of their staff are self-isolating, and that it is going to take some time even to fulfill existing orders, and so they aren't taking any more for the forseeable future.

The truth is that many people are already having trouble getting hold of the food they want. They have to buy whatever the supermarket still has some of, or nothing.

Something Darwinian seems to be happening. Anyone who is paying attention ought to know by now how dangerous this disease is, and roughly how at risk they and their immediate associates/family are. Some have no choice but to risk exposure, but many still don't understand, or don't care. They aren't following the advice, even if they or people close to them are at risk, and even in parts of London where the disease is spreading fast. They're still going to pubs, still using public transport, not really changing their behaviour much at all. The government seems to have decided that warning people to self-isolate if they are at risk is enough, and if the rest are stupid enough to get infected and pass the disease on to their friends and family (and other people) then so be it. All helps with the herd immunity, eh?

If I wasn't able to isolate, I'd be terrified right now. Not that that means I won't get it.

Being terrified is pointless for many people. They have to do what they have to do. Jobs to keep, roofs to keep over their heads and families to feed. Terror is a luxury many people cannot afford in this country. They just have to carry on regardless.

I don't like Snyder. He is an avowed Christian fundy, and was as busy declaring the end of the world in 2016 as he undoubtedly still is. He shifted websites when his 2016 claim became a joke in light of what happened post 2016...and Rapture just doesn't sell well to the non-believers of that reason for doom.

From that link: https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/18/bill-ac ... n-now.html

Wow. Not sure how to summarise that. Major player in US business calls on Trump to shut the entire country down for a month, and predicts every hotel in the world will go bust unless radical action is taken. Sounds like he is holding back tears from 13 mins.

I know two people who probably have the virus. If I'm in 12 weeks isolation why not just get a dose now and get it over with? I wonder how useful it is to self isolate for 12 weeks and then get the virus anyway?
Thoughts?

If you are young, fit and a bungee jumping, snow boarding risk loving type ... go for it.

However if you aren't yet a Dad and would like to be one sometime, maybe take a look at what parts of the male body the virus can attack ...

Well, son number two just arrived back from London on the National Express Bus. Picked him up at 6am this morning from Middlesbrough bus station. he is likely to be here for weeks if not months depending on how it all goes. Currently due for a Skype interview at 10am with a company do do remote mobile app development work while here.

Mixed up some 70% alcohol wash for him. He is going to stay more or less quarantined in his room for the first week or so just in case he has brought the virus up with him. He will use the alcohol wash to wipe any surfaces as he goes as and when he has to use any other part of the house.

Meanwhile, my new job is looking like it might to be going down the shitter, at least for a few months, due to this virus in any event. But, additionally, I am going to have to tell them about my son turning up cos of the possible increased risk. That may well put the final nail in. But, I have to tell them because I look after elderly clients and if I pass this virus on to them they will die, sure as shit.

When you're dealing with exponential growth, the time to act is when it feels too early.
