Well not everyone passes the hunter safety course and one of the things they teach is to not tolerate unsafe behavior by others.
And of course you should choose your hunting buddies carefully as your life can depend on them.
There are many published guides to the safe use of firearms, including safe ways to pass a gun, how to carry it, safe storage and so on.
Whilst times are normal I strongly urge following such advice.
During any serious emergency, instant readiness may be more important than firearm safety.
During serious emergencies it might actually be prudent to keep a loaded gun beside your bed. Much more use than in a locked gun cupboard, with the cartridges stored separately.

If there are no young children in the house (even visitors) then yes but otherwise a bit of control is needed. A locked box in the bedside table with a pin number release latch can keep the unauthorized from getting the weapon.
Don't use 911 as the pin number. Every crook will try that.
