If food is short, people will go where the food is. We can assume that as a given.
So what freely available food is in the countryside?

Only animals really.
That was my thought, out here in West Wales, there's not really much food to be had - unless you're willing and able to take down a cow or sheep!

Yes, foraging can be effective - but only if you know what you are doing and virtually no one does.

He also notes that the official figures of human to human transmission is modest outside China but much higher inside China.

Can anybody explain that?
China is known for overcrowded housing, public transport, and workplaces.
Generally poor standards of hygiene.
The UK is far from ideal in these respects, but better than china.
Indeed, but China isn't *that* bad. And to their advantage has been the fairly effective lock down of large urban areas. There are many hundreds of millions living in India, Indonesia, Africa etc where the baseline situation is worse and there'd be no chance of China-style lockdowns.

So, yes, it's a good question, why hasn't it escaped more effectively (yet)?

But there are more people (and houses to raid) in urban areas.

BTW Halal rustling of sheep is already a major problem in the countryside.

Gangs butcher the animals in the fields.

What, precisely, do you mean by "real"?

She was obviously extremely distressed and she was ranting about injustices, but with no particular or specific focus other than to make it clear she has had enough.

Well, no shit. I think we can safely say that if that shit had gone down in our own country, we would no doubt also have citizens equally at the end of their tether as our system struggled to cope.

I am neither condoning nor criticizing the Chinese authorities here. I am simply pointing out that they are dealing with shit we can only begin to imagine. I also happen to think they will fail, utterly in their attempts at quarantining. But, that is by the by.

But, what I do know is I am seeing all kinds of bollocks being spread about on social media, the clear sub-text being the demonisation of China as part of the ongoing demonisation of those sections of the globe that will not bow to the US jackboot.

Bullshit.

It is a real person in Wuhan, speaking very recently, and truthfully.

I don't think it has anything to do with the US.

clv101 wrote:20 million people on lockdown is quite remarkable, I wonder how long that situation can be sustained, surely not more than a week or two. Also, it could be interpreted in two ways. Either they are doing the responsible thing, making all efforts to prevent the virus escape (albeit a week late), or the situation on the ground is a lot worse than they are letting on.
Over three weeks since I wrote that. There are now several hundred million people in various degrees of lock down. It's impressive, and In think remarkably effective - the virus doesn't seem to have escaped very effectively outside China. Far from demonising, they've done well.

But I think likely to fail, and in that case, if it transpires months/years from now that their data was bogus the rest of the world is going blame China.

Yet. Which means it is under very strong selective pressure to find out how to survive.

The Big Question: What's so special about this virus?

Normal flu kills 400k a year worldwide - yet no mega fuss.
So what's so special about this virus to turn China into a dystopia?

I can think of:

* Much higher infectivity & death rate than advertised

* Some 'secret' damage caused by the infection e.g infertility, brain damage, reduced life span etc.

* Fear of mutation into something REALLY bad

Thoughts?

Just seen a C4 documentary.

A leading modeller believes that 60% of the UK population will be infected within 12 months with a death rate of 1%.

Ho, humm.
