Is there a Doctor in the house? Gotta get the timing and dosage just right.
The robust inflammatory response that follows infection is important for the control of virus proliferation but is also associated with lung damage, morbidity and death. The role of the different components of immune response underlying protection or disease during IAV infection is not completely elucidated. Overall, in the context of IAV infection, inflammation is a 'double edge sword' necessary to control infection but causing disease.

But, since it clearly is not and, given it is likely to be ciorculating for years if not forever, then bollocks to it I say. Just eat well, get plenty of sleep, maybe invest in some oxygen and some anti- inflamatories and then get on with living.

That's what I intend to do.
Why would you want to stop inflammation?
Because the body can have too much of a good thing if it reacts too strongly to a given pathogen. Generally speaking that is not the case and anti inflammatory drugs are used too often as a result. However, there are occasions when they are useful. Acute pneumonia being one example. Do you need me to explain why?
Well, you could explain why, however there is a non-toxic alternative, if you’re getting enough, but most people just don’t take enough.

But carry on with the anti-inflammatories.

The mass propaganda that the virus is under control is exactly what I expected from the government when they realised that the virus is beyond control. Declare victory and leave, metaphorically. The lunar holiday cannot be extended indefinitely, and many provinces have started returning to work for the general population. This will Inevitably trigger a surge of cases in the next week or so.

I have asked my wife to stop taking her immune suppressing drugs, which will leave her open to arthritis flare up.

Officials of some of the world’s largest oil producers are scrambling to stem a sharp fall in prices over concerns that the growing coronavirus epidemic will reduce demand from China, the biggest importer.

Over the weekend, officials from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, as well as Russia, agreed to meet on Tuesday and Wednesday in Vienna, where OPEC has its headquarters, to discuss the situation in the oil markets, according to two people briefed on the plans.

The big producers are also discussing whether to schedule an emergency ministerial-level meeting this month, moving up a gathering planned for early March. On the agenda would be production cuts of up to one million barrels a day, or about 1 percent of world supplies, according to a person familiar with the material.

“They are absolutely trying to put a floor under prices, said Amrita Sen, chief oil analyst at Energy Aspects, a market research firm.

The price of Brent crude, the international benchmark, has fallen about 19 percent over the last month to less than $55 a barrel, the lowest in more than a year. The plunge has undercut the impact of the carefully orchestrated production cuts that OPEC announced at its December meeting in Vienna.

West Texas intermediate, the American benchmark, entered a bear market on Monday after it fell more than 20 percent from its January high, settling at $50.11.

OPEC seems unlikely to stem the price declines soon. Ms. Sen said China was already reducing its orders for March from Saudi Arabia, the de facto leader of OPEC and the world’s largest oil exporter. It is too late to cut February orders.

Few thousand cases, few hundred deaths? Official data is worthless.

Season of Fear and National Budgeting Go Hand in Hand

Whatever the source, the hysteria being drummed up follows a now well-worn pattern where the population is kept in a perpetual state of anxiety and fear about microbes so that drug companies (aided by federal health officials) can come to the rescue with yet another expensive (and potentially mandatory) drug or vaccine.

Back in 2005, headlines warned the U.S. was facing a cataclysmic extermination event with a calculated 2 million Americans succumbing to the bird flu; the best-case scenario had a calculated death toll of 200,000. The same scare tactics were used during the 2009 swine flu outbreak.

Both pandemics turned out to be grossly exaggerated threats, but that didn't result in a more conservative, cool-headed approach to subsequent outbreaks. If anything, efforts to drum up fear and hysteria have only escalated.

In 2014, we were told Ebola might overtake the U.S. and then it was pertussis outbreaks.23 In January 2015, it was measles in Disneyland. In January 2016, it was zika, followed by more news about pertussis outbreaks.24 In 2017 and 2018 it was influenza,25 then back to measles again in 2019.26 Now we have coronavirus. January and February appear to be a favorite time to launch a global disease scare with the dutiful assistance of corporatized media. It's convenient, seeing how usually by the first Monday in February every year (Feb. 3, 2020), the president sends the U.S. Congress the administration's budget requesting funds to be allocated to federal agencies for the next fiscal year's budget (Oct. 1, 2020 - Sept. 30, 2021).27

Each time there's a public health scare, the Pharma and public health lobby is able to vie for a larger slice of taxpayer money to pay for drug and vaccine development.28

January 23, 2020, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, announced a coronavirus vaccine is in the pipeline, with human trials set to start in about three months.29 Stock prices for makers of coronavirus vaccines experienced an immediate upswing30,31 in response to media reports of impending doom.
Anyone for anti-inflammatories?

Having seen the abstract of that paper I posted, I'll pass, thanks. Instead, being in a vulnerable group, I'm going to make enquiries about volunteering for a vaccine trial. Being as I've done a few clinical trials already. While taking that risk might help Big Pharma, it also helps the NHS.

(edit - Bug Pharma... Haha, perhaps Woodburner can use that :D )

Latest reports indicate a returning South Korean tourist from Thailand testing positive.

That's the Thai tourism industry screwed, then. The most popular Chinese tourist destination. Another major flight hub closed down before too long.

Come to think of it, would you book an expensive and entirely optional overseas flight to anywhere - for three to six months time? Sitting in a recirculated air tube in close proximity to people who've been God knows where? To some place that might be infected by then? Not me. And if enough folks feel the same way, then that's the airlines, hotels etc - somewhat exposed. Behind them, Boeing, already in deep trouble.

3500 pax and crew detained on a cruise ship which had an infected Hong Kong man on board, who fell ill after disembarking. That might be a useful epidemiological case study on transmissibility. Another part of the tourist industry soon in trouble. But with all those cabins, they might be usefully converted to hospital ships.

You are turning into sushil_yadav Woodburner.

We all understand that the overuse of anything we put into our bodies is bad. Also, that drugs manufactures will keep on reinventing the wheel to keep sales up. Really, we do.

Meanwhile, sensible humans have been putting judicious amounts of stuff, with at least some limited efficacy, into their bodies for millennia and will no doubt continue to do so. But, as I said, we all die in the end anyway.

RalphW I think you should order these for your wife. It's the stuff that you can't get easily now. Mine came a week ago and they are 2022 dated 3 x 100ml. This stuff used to be £1 a bottle but is hard to find - mostly new ingredients on the shelves. I see the US still sells it including costco in cheap tablets . UK costco doesn't have it, so get what you can.

This is the 'big one', billion+ likely to be infected and the economic consequences significant, far larger impact than 2008 crash.
