New coronavirus in/from China

I'm beginning to wonder if this might have actually already infected far more people than is suspected and that, for the vast majority, it is no worse than a bad cold, so they would not even have been diagnosed. In which case, the chances of dying from it, statistically, are very low

Yes, for any individual, the chance of dieing from it is very low. The issue is the secondary impacts of society and the global economy. China's economy is likely to be sure in 2020, recession even?

Professor Chris Whitty (Chief Med Officer, England) said

the risk level of coronavirus raised to moderate because of global situation, not cases in Newcastle.
"It's a moderately transmittable virus. This is not at the top end of the range of transmittable respiratory virus'.
"Mortality looks at 2 percent."

If that's the case, then it's a real nasty and could kill very large numbers. But - at 250 or so, it hasn't yet done so in China. But when they can run antibody tests on entire neighbourhoods of Wuhan, it's only then will we know the prevalence vs mortality, and can then react appropriate to the true risk.

We used to have something like that in Merrie England too. Doors had big crosses roughly daubed upon them, with optional 'May the Lord have Mercy upon this House.' wooden notices. Which they do still sell in the Range and B&Q. (Made in China, while stocks last)

No way of tracing the punters as it's cash in (infected) hand. Sometimes with banknotes given back as change. Which might remain virulent fomites for 14 days.

Horseman Coaches said

The coach company that collected British passengers after they landed in the UK on a flight from Wuhan has said its vehicles will be â€œdeep cleanedâ€�.

At least seven coaches from Horseman Coaches Ltd were seen arriving at the Brize Norton RAF base in Oxfordshire at around 10am.

The drivers had agreed to take the job, a company spokesman said, and will be given paid leave to â€œremain at home for the next 10 daysâ€�. (Not 14?)

The vehicles will also be removed from service for a minimum of 10 days after they are cleaned, the company said.

The drivers were not supplied with any hazmat bunny suits. And will return to their families. Tonight. Family members presumably remain free to go to shops and schools etc.

It is understood the contract only specified Four Horsemen, not seven, which is considered overkill.

The American stock market is down some 550 points today. A single day loss of two percent of it's value. Airline stocks and the energy companies that supply the jet fuel leading the way. All being blamed on the pandemic developing in China.

Yes, one if the big threats to come from this is a China-led global financial crisis.

Joking aside. The sooner the actual threat this virus represents is known, the better it can be properly managed.
