Why all the gloom and doom, unless it’s because since the oil doom didn’t happen so there is a need for a replacement.
There seems little point, as no one seems to want a solution, Never mind, I won’tcatch it. As with most diseases, it’s not so much a case of “catching it as “earning it, mostly through inadequate nutrition, provided you’ve sorted the sanitation. The sanitation would include cleaning up the Chinese wet markets.

And I am not sure that the oil doom didn't happen. It just didn't happen the way some people thought it would. It was the rising price of oil that popped the property bubble in 2008. It turns out that the price of oil can only go so high before it collapses the weakest other part of the system (in that case, irresponsible mortgages), and presumably that will happen again next time oil prices start rising because demand outstrips supply.
British Airways stops all flights in/out of China, presumably other airlines will to. That's a major problem for all the 'stuff' that goes along for the ride in the hold. Chinese made drugs for example...
Anyone got a good list of important Chinese exports we can now expect a global shortage of, both due to factory closure and broken transport links?

For the first time in quite a while, I find myself in 100% agreement UE......UndercoverElephant wrote:No doom and gloom from me. One FedX plane can replace the cargo hold load of a dozen passenger jets so no real problem there . You are correct in that other airlines are also cancelling flights some through March others to be announced. Reason given that bookings to China have dropped precipitously and no one wants any return passengers from China.clv101 wrote:British Airways stops all flights in/out of China, presumably other airlines will to. I can't think of anything from China we can't get elsewhere. What do you think they export that is important?
I just heard today there's over a hundred life saving drugs used in US hospitals, exclusively imported from China.vtsnowedin wrote:One FedX plane can replace the cargo hold load of a dozen passenger jets so no real problem there . Huwaei 5G tech for keeping an eye on GCHQ et al
Computers
Solar panels
Cool Nike trainers / sneakers (and other brands too)
Tinned black bean sauce with green peppers
Literally lots of the DIY stuff I like to buy at B&Q, including the cheap barbeque grills essential for living off-grid, and plenty else Adam2 mentioned in the related / revived preps thread.

I saw on a friend's TV today that Abbott who sell diabetic monitors have encountered shortages. Unexplained. Hmmm. Possibly they, or components of these, are Chinese sourced. It's not life saving but a useful tech. Highly likely other med tech that is critical will be impacted.

While I was aware of the meth-amphetamine illegal supply line I was unaware of the extent US drug manufacturers have moved production to China . Why the government allowed that is beyond me. At any rate one 747 freighter transport can fly in 95 tonnes of drugs on one flight so not to worry in the short term.clv101 wrote:I just heard today there's over a hundred life saving drugs used in US hospitals, exclusively imported from China.vtsnowedin wrote:One FedX plane can replace the cargo hold load of a dozen passenger jets so no real problem there . If nCoV continues to ultimately infect half of the world's population (It won't reach all of us, through increasing immunity, control measures, and reducing opportunity to spread) and the average mortality rate is 2% as currently estimated, coming in waves over, say, two years, then it won't even flatline population growth as we merrily continue to pop sprogs, increasing the population as we currently are, at the rate of 1.5% per year. That could even get worse if most contraceptives are now made in China.UndercoverElephant wrote:

I'd lob in a Carrington Event, and a Supervolcano for good measure, to cull numbers.

I naturally stockpiled two spare sensors, but have been running on different tech for the time being. This gear is only a fancy nice-to-have. The problem some people are now having is not having reliable backup systems in place.mikepepler wrote: We're going to live to regret the just-in-time supply chain...

Life saving drug? I can guarantee these do not work. All the recipients will die in the end. From a scientist, I am disappointed in your lack of correct use of words. It is expect of the medical industry of course.

"Life saving drug" is the accepted term, despite the fact that all users of such drugs do eventually die.
Likewise we refer to "lives saved" by the RNLI or the fire brigade, despite the fact that those saved invariably die eventually.
