20 million people on lockdown is quite remarkable, I wonder how long that situation can be sustained, surely not more than a week or two. Also, it could be interpreted in two ways. Either they are doing the responsible thing, making all efforts to prevent the virus escape (albeit a week late), or the situation on the ground is a lot worse than they are letting on.

I suspect that the situation on the ground is very much worse than is being admitted by TPTB in china.
The present lockdown will make it easier to conceal the true state of affairs, for example mass burials or cremations without witnesses.

AFAIK our government have not yet issued any call to "not panic." Any such announcement would a sure sign of a most serious situation.

It would in my view be prudent to review ones preps for any large scale spread in the UK.
Preps for a UK pandemic may be discussed in this thread

If the situation was worse than they are admitting, don't you think we'd know? Are the Chinese able to control all communications from the affected areas?

I suspect that they can control ALMOST ALL communication from the affected area. Any limited reports that do leak out may then be dismissed as CIA propaganda, or the work of "foreign powers" or "counter revolutionaries"

And of course people spreading panic can simply be executed.

mirror now reporting 6 suspected cases in uk

I think we will find out in the next few days whether this is a big deal or not. Spread appears to be very fast.

Better half is on antidepressant drugs and suffers very badly with chesty colds.

CUHK professor Guan Yi speaking to Caixin Media interviewee (my best attempt at verbatim, source: http://www.caixin.com/2020-01-23/101507670.html) :

"This time it is different from SARS. There is no comparison. 60-70% of SARS infectees caught the virus from a few individual super-infectors. The chain of infection was clear, and all that had to be done was to block these few people.

This time, the infectors have spread all around at this point. We can no longer conduct an epidemiological survey.

A conservative estimate would be that the scale of the infection is 10 times as that of SARS. I have experienced this much, but never have I been this scared. Most (of other epidemics) could be controlled, but this time I am frightened."
Could this be the big one?

Guaifenesin is the stuff that works. It appears to be unobtainium in the UK. It used to be £1 a bottle from bells healthcare at every pound shop, but someone has pulled it - except for v expensive brand drugs:

I am waiting for some from the US. It has the added advantage of interacting with paracetemol and aspirin. Take both and you will have a sleep that will put the narcotic trade out of business. Now I wonder why you can't get it??

Lots of news filtering out now that this virus is dangerous and the Chinese authorities have tried to suppress news of how bad it is.

I certainly hope so. Lots of problems solved in one go if it's bad enough. I'm content to take my chances.

But let's be honest. It's probably going to kill a few and then that will be that.
