Are we on the brink of an electric car revolution?

Our transport is heavily oil-based. What are the alternatives?

I reckon this is nigh-on impossible: a solar-powered RV.

Loaded with kids, bikes, grub, gear and parents?

Should be doable with a modest range, 100 miles is stated. Such vehicles rend to be rather heavy, so the addition of occupants and camping supplies makes only a small percentage change to the total weight.

And presuming a sunny parking spot and remaining camped for some days, then it should charge for the return trip.

Even more interesting, and probably of more use, from the same page is this on flow batteries. An ordinary car would be a more sensible application but I suppose they are in competition with Tesla.

A solar RV might work well for retired persons.
How long are you staying?
As long as it takes to charge up the batteries.
If you don't have to be back at work Monday morning another day at a place you chose to drive to is no problem.

Unless pv becomes far more efficient, this may work in some sunny countries with long daylight hours. And the occupants still use gas to cook or outsource their fuel use through fast food and the like.

Good for touring the south of France, Italy or Spain but less so for Wales, Ireland and Scotland.

Ah yes, Texas to Arizona much easier then Vermont to Minnesota .
I envision a trailer towed behind the RV /caravan about two meters wide by ten meters long that held a array of solar panels that could be raised to the optimum angle for solar production where ever it was parked. It could just be parked in a East-West location or the owner could move it a couple of times a day to maximize the output. While mostly it would charge the battery in the EV itself it would have at least one battery built in to the trailer so it could be decoupled from the RV and build charge while the RV was doing side trips.
Just a thought.

Ford has revealed (on sale next year) their new Mustang Mach E EV. Actually an SUV instead of the traditional coup or convertible Mustang it has up to a 300 mile range and charges at home on 240 volts at a rate of 22 miles in an hour. Tesla needs to get cracking or the big dogs will pass them in the dust.

Showed it to my wife last night, trying to lure her lust away from Tesla.

Showed it to my wife last night, trying to lure her lust away from Tesla. My lime green VW electric Van suggestion/hint/hint hasn't fared so well, so far. But just maybe if I can get her thinking something besides Tesla, I can gradually get her leaning another way and then SURPRISE!!! hit her with the VW van.

There is another board I have been on a while back. There motto was if there were no pictures it did not happen. I'll believe the Lime Green VW EV when we see the pictures. In the mean time tread lightly if you like sleeping indoors. 8)
