I wouldn't have thought that they would have much competition from on line retailers. I've bought the odd bottle of rum on line that I couldn't find locally. It was 120 proof! Made some lovely rumtopf.

Largely contract cleaning for the public sector, including network rail.
Interserve now "saved" by a deal done with creditors.

What does 120 proof mean Ken? Is that an American alcohol measure? In the UK alchohol content is measured as ABV (alcohol by volume), ABV can only be 100% maximum, by definition

so...just double the actual real percentage volume then?

As in.... my dick is really 10 inches, not five inches despite what the ruler says?

That figures...

It is not an attempt at deception just a traditional measure of the industry. Akin to you Brits weighing people by the stone.
My bottle of old NO. 7 bourbon is labeled " Alcohol 40%by volume(80 proof)"
151 Rum gets it's name from its 151 proof content.

Proof was used in the UK. ABV is very recent. It dates back to before modern chemistry.
100 proof is the amount of alcohol that can be ignited when a cloth is soaked in it. Presumably 50 is an equal amount of water added to 100 etc. I think 100% is about 160 proof in UK measures.

edit 175 proof if my maths is right:
40%BV = 70 proof

Yes, 70 degrees proof is about equal to 40% alcohol by volume.
I am old enough to remember a transition period when bottles of spirits carried both measurements.

100% proof is the amount of alcohol which when diluted with water will still allow gunpowder to burn in it as far as I can remember. It's not a 2:1 ratio but not far off.

I prefer a Mountgay Rum. Captian Morgan's Spiced will do though.

Well I learned something today.

(also I think it's 54% = 100 degProof.)

May we now move on to how much whiskey is in a fifth sized bottle and how that came to be a standard?
