The fires in the Brazilian rain forest are widely reported as being the worst on record.
Many are said to have been started deliberately to clear land for hamburger production and palm oil plantations.

Hotter and dryer weather has encouraged fire spread beyond the areas intended to be cleared.

Now got to the stage that sporting fixtures are being adversely affected.

Big Bash T20 cricket match between Sydney Thunder and Adelaide Strikers - played at Canberra - was abandoned due to air quality issues. Source
Fellow umpire Sam Nogajski told Fox News: "There was one [ball] that was hit to square leg then and Paul [Wilson] had a problem picking it up.

"Visibility is very difficult. We can smell the smoke and the air quality itself is something else."

Adelaide Strikers opener Jake Weatherald added: "It's been a bit hard to breathe all game. Even the smell - it was like you were standing next to a fire."

The Australian fires are now yesterdays news, but have worsened and look like the worst ever.
Dozens of lives lost, or missing and feared lost.
Hundreds of homes destroyed.
State of emergency declared.
Some reports suggest that the hottest and driest conditions are yet to come and that fires may therefore get even worse.

That might be the case here but they won't be last week's news for quite a time in Aus.

No shit Sherlock! It's only the beginning of the summer there so hotter and drier conditions are bound to arise.

And I wonder why so many US citizens from Southern California are landing here and applying for Irish citizenship.

What should we do with them?

Canadian village largely destroyed by fire.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-57678054

This follows the exceptionally severe and very early heatwave that we talked about elsewhere.

Apparently this village had just recorded the highest ever temperature in Canada days before. Perhaps the two are connected?
