Collateral damage.

"As deadly fires and heat waves kill scores across the globe, a new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change reports that when there are abnormally hot temperatures, there also tend to be higher suicide rates.

The study warns up to 26,000 more people could die by suicide in the United States by 2050 if humans don’t reduce emissions of greenhouse gas pollution. We speak to Dr. Sanjay Basu, co-author of the new study and assistant professor of medicine at Stanford University."

26,000 deaths in the next 32 years is hardly a show stopper, and it will be more than made up by the 600 million expected immigrants.

Fortunately we are not at risk of suicide as we kept the windows shut all day, and it is still a couple of degrees F cooler in the house than outside. Current outside temperature at 2218 is 79ºF.

So, extreme weather events as a result of extreme fossil fuel use.

So what do we do? Get in the car, go on holiday. Queue up at the channel tunnel. Get on a plane, give the airlines their biggest boost for years. Oh, and don't forget to water the golf courses.

It is if you are one of the 26,000!

I agree there is a lot of environmental damage associated with fossil fuel use, but is the cause the fossil fuel, or the huge increase in population?

I agree that considered overall this is not a very significant rate of excess mortality over 32 years in a country the size of the USA. I don't know how the figure was arrived at and am somewhat suspicious of the veracity of this sort of study. Maybe the heat will push less or maybe more people over the edge and is just one factor in a whole range of issues coming along making life more stressful.

In some ways in the rich world we can ameliorate some of these, with for example, air conditioning. However you are quite correct in implying that a big driver of mass movements of people from poorer countries with even more extreme heat events than Northern Europe is not being able to buy their way out of a trouble disproportionately caused by the rich world.

Die offs and population crashes are surely not just a result purely of resource shortages such as food but part of the mix are issues such as stress on the population due to the antagonism resulting from overcrowding and environmental degradation which includes extreme weather events e.g. temperature, wind and precipitation extremes.

A bit of both, really; increasing numbers of people using increasing amounts of fossil fuel. And increasing numbers of people eating increasing amounts of food produced using fossil fuel. Don't worry though the increase will stop over the next 30 odd years unless TPTB start paying people to have more children to prop up economic growth!! After all economic growth can go on for ever, can't it!!

The use. Without the use, there might be no huge increase in population; if there was an increase anyway, it might not be climate change we're talking about.

The present high temperatures in parts of Southern Europe are expected to go still higher in the next few days.
"dangerous heat" is forecast in several places, with a strong possibility that new records will be set.

Well, today I learned that 'canicule' is French for 'heatwave'. Bizarrely, it's also Russian for 'holiday'.

Meanwhile they're forecasting 48 degC (FFS!!) in Spain:

Whoa, hold on there! 47 deg C - not 48. You greens, always exaggerating.

I am wondering how far off can peak heat be now and what temperature will it clock in at?
