On reflection, either the gas is being sharply under reported, or demand has been sharply curtailed by disconnecting contract customers without public announcement

More likely the government is afraid that Russia will recall its LNG tankers and are requesting reduced demand from industry with a D notice to prevent the media talking about it.

Or perhaps it is simply that coal is cheaper at present.

Does not explain demand being 3Gw below normal for a weekday. Weather was not noticeably warmer, unmetered renewables can't suddenly increase that much

As already noted, PV generation was already erroneously recorded as zero for the earlier part of the day.
There is however no reason to suspect that ACTUAL PV production had ceased, PV still being produced but not recorded will show only as a reduction in demand, and result in indicated demand being lower than true demand.

I do not believe that the situation is serious enough to cut off large users, and neither could this be kept secret.

Whilst the Gridwatch site appears to be generally accurate and reliable, it is clearly in error at present.

Most or all figures are unchanged since approx. 02-00 this morning.
No increase in load as the night ends and the working day starts.
No random fluctuations in wind.
No increase in CCGT to meet the day time load.
No PV, which though very limited at about 09-00 this time of year, is undoubtedly producing something.

Gridwatch is a useful source of data, but always apply the common sense test.
