Hopefully we will be alright for the next thousand years then although I doubt it somehow!!
According to abc news the disaster in Texas is ‘Unprecedented’ with flooding ‘beyond anything expected’

I wonder what they were expecting?

Although it might be "Fake News" to Trump, these type of events have been widely predicted as part of Global Warming. The same weather events but of increased intensity. After a few more weather related disasters it might hopefully dawn on him that Global Warming/Climate Change isn't just Chinese hype! Or is that me just being an optimist?

Did anyone notice the Fake News in that report about "sink holes"? The "sink hole" that they showed was just a stream washing out a culvert!

It looks like this is set to roll on a few more days at least. It will be interesting to connoisseurs of denial as to who the great leader blames for this one. If I were an injured victim in a Texan hospital the last thing I would want to see would be to see him appearing at my bedside for a photo opportunity.

Now would seem a good opportunity for the righteous Southern born again believers to demand a mass ark building programme.

The rates of precipitation occurring are truly terrifying.

Climate change is not allowed in much of the USA.
The scenes that we are witnessing are natural variations in the climate, which will soon return to normal.
Unless it gets much worse, in which case it might be the wrath of god striking down atheists, teachers of evolution, and abortionists.

Dramatic pictures of chair bound residents of an old folks home up to their waists in flood water, and of a stranded truck driver rescued at the last minute by a sheriffs department airboat flagged down by a TV reporter.

There was a video on TV last night of a woman with a child saying that they were really worried so they prayed to god and they were so grateful when he sent someone to rescue them! I bet she voted for Trump!

 Yes I am sure they have plans to pass robust legislation to prevent it taking hold! You can imagine a "War on Climate" being announced with no trace of irony. Trump tweeted that it was "a 500 year event" with US media now soothingly claiming "a 800 year event".

Don't you love the way these figures are bandied about like a conjuror pulling rabbits out of a hat! By this reckoning I feel that Trump probably believes his splendid heavenly self to be a once in 2,000 year event.

To pin one storm on climate breakdown is almost impossible. However, there's a trend towards more tropical storms and hurricanes in the north Atlantic, of increasing severity. Stuff climate breakdown deniers in a vulnerable spot, I say.

And we have to stop building. Impermeable surfaces do not help in times of flood.

Humans and other creatures are dying in the rest of the world because of our rape of this planet but apparently they aren't 'worth' as much as American lives.

I've said numerous times that the only way climate breakdown will ever be taken seriously in the west is with something truly stupendous, such as a several million USonians killed - and perhaps not even then.

In reality, Harvey is a drop in the ocean compared with what's needed.

A currently popular joke circulating goes as follows.

A victim is about to be surrounded by rising flood water and is offered a lift out in a truck "no thanks, I am staying put, the Lord will save me"
Later when actually surrounded by water they are offered escape by boat "no thanks, the Lord will preserve me"
The next day the flood has deepened and they are sitting on the roof and are offered rescue by helicopter "thank you sir, but I am staying put, the Lord will save me"
They later drown, and are admitted to heaven and ask "what am I doing here, the Lord said he would save me" to which the reply from God is " I sent a truck, then a boat, and finally an aircraft ! what more did you expect ?"

Hah hah, like it.

Funny how the best jokes usually reveal some element of truth.

I read a twitter thread this morning where theories for the effects of Harvey were either gods will or a combined attack from Americas enemies using Haarp weapons. Any suggestion that climate change might have been a contributing factor was scorned. Goebbels would be delighted if he could see this.

I doubt that the enemies of America have the technology to alter the weather for political or military gain.
With climate change prohibited, that just leaves the will of god.

This flood has progressed beyond "natural variability" methinks.

".. the death toll from monsoon floods in India, Bangladesh and Nepal has climbed above 1,200, as rescue workers scramble to provide aid to millions of people stranded by the worst such disaster in years."

This is several orders of magnitude greater than the wee shower in Texas but of course gets little coverage compared to all the hand wringing and arm waving over Harvey.

While I agree that impermeable surfaces do not help over a metre of rain in a few days would overwhelm any surface and cause flooding. Don't give Trump a get out!

From some of the news footage it seems that Trump supporters still haven't cottoned on to the fact that global warming causes more, and more intense, storms. So, sad as it is for people in the US like VT, all we can hope for is more and worse of the same for the US until stupid Trump supporters get it into their thick heads that what they are suffering is being suffered all over the world because they are using five times their share of the world's available resources to support their profligate lifestyles and that is what is causing their extreme weather.

Exactly (well, the sentiment) what I said to some people yesterday. I didn't realise the death toll was so high. 1 brown ≠ 1 white

Regard all the coverage of Harvey as gloating and it isn't so annoying!
