US Presidency poll

Post by Lord Beria3 »

Thought it would be interesting to see what the consensus on PS on the upcoming US presidential elections.

As it seems almost certain now to be a Trump versus Clinton campaign, lets see how the PS crowd would vote...

I won't be voting for either one. A hold your nose vote for one of them will just encourage them and let them think they have a mandate.
I can't express how discouraged I am , and how poor the prospects for America in the next four years are given this matchup.

I'd tend to say that not voting is a bit of a cop-out from civic duty, but in your situation I think you may have a justifiable point. Don't vote - it only encourages them!

Not voting is not a cop-out on civic duty when you are presented with the self-serving greedy politicians available today. They don't deserve a vote as (stated above) they just claim they have a mandate. They have nothing of the sort IMO. They would have a mandate only if they were honest about their policies, but they are habitually dishonest.

The person who gets the most votes has the same political power however many people turn out. I have just been canvassing. We keep records of those people who vote and those who don't and don't knock on the doors of the non-voters as it is essentially a waste of time in terms of winning the election.

I find this unacceptable. It is supposed to be a secret ballot, and that should include the knowledge of whether anyone votes or not.

Not a great choice, but given the circumstances, I'd vote Donald Trump.

The marked register is a document open to public inspection. It is necessary as part of reducing election fraud. The ballot is secret as to who someone votes for (subject to a high court order.)

Can you deliberately spoil your vote - write None of the above, or write in the name of someone else?

Also - how do independants get on the voting list?

There is talk of Sanders standing as an independent. as there was for Trump.

The rules vary by jurisdiction but where I live (and help count the votes) Registration to vote is free of declaring a party affiliation. When voting in primaries they let you chose which ballot you want to fill out and cast. At one time they gave you both ballots and had you cast one and place the other unfilled out ballot in the discard bin to keep your choice unrecorded.
So independents have no problem registering to vote or voting but their candidates have a hard time getting on the ballot.
When counting votes a real persons name that is written in is tabulated and counted and every ballot has a space for write in candidates. Though rare write in candidates have occasionally won. Most often a widow of a candidate that died just before the election.
A vote for Micky Mouse or the like is counted as a spoiled ballot just the same as someone that voted for both candidates for an office. In every race I have counted about one percent of the ballots are spoiled and that is especially true of presidential races.
