But we were talking about the timescale between the Carboniferous era and today. The point I was making is that the sun was dimmer/cooler when all that carbon was taken out of the active biosphere.

There was a lot more volcanic activity on earth in the past perhaps from underground radioactive decay.

Yeah...I was wrong. The temperature only starts ramping up in a significant way when the star starts to run out of hydrogen.

In the past the crust would have been thinner and the core hotter so magma would have been able to burn through the crust more often. The crust has thickened as the earth has gradually cooled and will continue to do so but at a very slow rate by human standards.
