Maybe global economic collapse is the only (distant, minor) hope.this deal does nothing to forestall a complete, total, unmitigated disaster that is likely to spell the end of agriculture, urbanized civilization, and may doom humans, along with most other large vertebrate species, to extinction.

Orlov is losing patience with the whole exercise by the sound of things. Don't blame him.
Even a 2degC increase condemns the world to massive land loss as the West Antarctic and Greenland Ice sheets collapse into the ocean. London, New York, Washington, Florida will all go along with most of Bangladesh. We'll see some mas migration then!!

It may well take a country or, at least, a major population centre in the minority world to disappear before true meaningful action is taken as opposed to rhetoric (not forgetting the few ineffective but sensible individuals of course).
As Klein and others have noted, we don't have long, which makes the US/China guff criminally distracting.

London could be one of the first to have problems. The Thames Barrier is being used more and more often even now and there is talk of having to increase the height of it and it's attendant flood walls in the near future. Then there's increasing erosion along the East Coast and loss of houses there.emordnilap wrote:It may well take a country or, at least, a major population centre in the minority world to disappear before true meaningful action is taken as opposed to rhetoric ...
Bangladesh is likely to be the world's major source of Climate Change refugees in the near future as the Ganges Delta erodes. India is already building a wall to keep them out but Biff will take all he can so that's alright!!

Never mind 2°C, we're already committed to that with the current ~0.8°kenneal - lagger wrote: Even a 2degC increase condemns the world to massive land loss as the West Antarctic and Greenland Ice sheets collapse into the ocean. It's just timing that's in doubt.

Some small movement.
Asked about the overwhelming agreement among experts on the cause and trajectory of global warming, Thune began with a familiar GOP climate-change dodge: “Climate change is occurring, it’s always occurring.” But then he said this: “There are a number of factors that contribute to that, including human activity. The question is, what are we going to do about it and at what cost?”
In three sentences, the number-three Republican in the Senate admitted that human activity is affecting the climate and that this concern demands a policy response.

Funny I should say that. Other people hold the same opinion! Shock horror.emordnilap wrote:It may well take a country or, at least, a major population centre in the minority world to disappear before true meaningful action is taken
Bit jealous of the name. Some, like former diplomat Sir Crispin Tickell, have suggested that extreme weather events will be the only thing that prompts meaningful action on climate.

Yes, the shock doctrine works in mysterious ways. Well, not so mysterious.
One of the questions - "To what extent do you think each of the following contributed to the floods?" - has the answer "Lack of preparation by households and businesses". Very poorly worded indeed. There is growing public acceptance of the human contribution to climate change, according to a new study published today. The latest results from a national survey show public agreement that humans are causing climate change is at its highest level for 5 years.
The researchers also find that those affected by the UK winter floods in 2013-14 were significantly more likely to be concerned about climate change than those that weren't affected.
