Islam is one of the three Judaeo-Christians religions. They all believe, in their own ways, in the God of Abraham. Thus, they are also known as the Abrahamic religions.

And they all share, in various languages, the commandment, Thou shallt not kill.

Being a spectator, however, seems to be regarded as just fine and dandy.

I deliberately didn't say "Abrahamic religions" because Islam is different to the other two in this respect. The Quran is not full of metaphors and stories. It is an instruction/law book, and that is pretty much all it is. It is supposed to be taken literally, always was, and still is.

Of course it won't. This is the insane logic of "collective punishment". Israel can't get its hands on specific individuals (usually), so it "retaliates" against their families or their whole community. In their messed up version of reality, they justify this by thinking that the fear this induces will stop the attacks, but anyone with a properly functioning brain must surely know that the actual result will be to create ever more people who have lost everything, have no hope and nothing to live for apart from to hit back at the evil that destroyed their life.

Yes. I don't even have "18 relatives" (more like under a dozen), and even I understand that.

I just wonder why they do it, given that it very obviously isn't making Israel any safer. To be fair, the people I know who live in Israel, are apparently wondering the same thing.

I think it's a method of repression (either explicit or implicit). These episodes of bombardment happen every so often, on some pretext or another. The World stands by and wrings its hands. Just as the World is getting to the point of saying "Enough!", the attacks fade away, until the next time.

There are parallels with domestic abuse; the insidious type in which one partner keeps the other one controlled through a campaign of systematic, low-grade psychological and physical bullying, without launching an attack so violent that it has the neighbours complaining and the police coming round.

I can understand someone being caught in the moment and mesmerised by such a spectacle, but actually taking the trouble to take your sofa up there..Come ON!

(The guy in the front does look like he's rather be somewhere else though.)

Time for an infographic (or at least some annotated drawings)

Meanwhile the BBC told me:
Dear Mr Vernon

Thank you for contacting us about the recent escalation in violence in Gaza and southern Israel.

We have received a wide range of feedback about our coverage of this story across our television and radio programmes and the BBC News website. In order to use our TV licence fee resources efficiently, this response aims to answer the key concerns, but we apologise in advance if it doesn’t address your specific points in the manner you would prefer.

BBC News has reported extensively on Israel’s recent military actions in Gaza. Reports on the BBC News Channel, on BBC One’s main news bulletins and during radio news bulletins have detailed the series of airstrikes on Gaza. We have reported on the mounting civilian deaths and casualties following Israel Defence Force airstrikes, and on the infrastructural destruction of an already isolated and densely populated area.

Our reporting has followed the unfolding of these events, as information has become available, as part of our very extensive coverage. Across this coverage we have heard from those who believe Israel’s response has been disproportionate and amounts to collective punishment of the Palestinians, as well as from those who disagree.

We have reported on the context of the conflict in light of Israel’s continuing blockade of the strip and on the resulting socio-economic deprivation. We have also detailed the considerable differences between Hamas and Israel’s respective military capabilities and have detailed Israel’s modern defence systems, such as Iron Dome:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-28252155

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-20415675

BBC News has also examined the cause of the conflict, as seen by each side, including the impact of the blockade and the occupation. We believe we have reported on these issues in a fair and impartial manner.

Please be assured we raised your concerns with senior editorial staff at BBC News.

Thank you, once again, for taking the time to contact us.

Kind Regards

Israeli MP Ayelet Shaked wrote: They have to die and their houses should be demolished so that they cannot bear any more terrorists. They are all our enemies and their blood should be on our hands. This also applies to the mothers of the dead terrorists.
Behind every terrorist stand dozens of men and women, without whom he could not engage in terrorism. They are all enemy combatants, and their blood shall be on all their heads. Now this also includes the mothers of the martyrs, who send them to hell with flowers and kisses. They should follow their sons, nothing would be more just. They should go, as should the physical homes in which they raised the snakes. Otherwise, more little snakes will be raised there.
Pure evil.

I have to admit, taken as quoted, that does sound like a call to genocide.

The Palestinians would say that it works both ways, I suppose. So we have a never ending cycle of killings and retaliation. It's an old fashioned blood feud on an international scale.

I read that story about Ayelet Shaked somewhere else on the Internet and thought, no, that can't be true, somebody made it up. I was wrong. She needs locking up, fast.

And in case anyone thinks I may have been seduced by the terrorists' propaganda, here's an article by Ayelet Shaked herself attempting to defend herself. Somebody take her to the Hague.
