Oh dear, UE, who I have great respect for, appears to have been taken in by the severely flawed mainstream analysis of the Ukraine crisis. Steve has already captured the real issues.
Regarding Russia stopping flow of gas, it never happened during the cold war. so it wont happen now!!!

So if no one fired off a nuclear warhead during the cold war that proves it can't happen now? Different weapon but same reasoning.

Actually my logic is sound. If during the constant tension of the Cold War we (the West and the East) managed to avoid sending warheads at each other, it is much less likely now since the Cold War ended.vtsnowedin wrote:Logic fail there LB.Lord Beria3 wrote:Oh dear, UE, who I have great respect for, appears to have been taken in by the severely flawed mainstream analysis of the Ukraine crisis. It is not in Russia's interest to stop supplying gas to Europe as it would ruin their strategic relationship with the Germans, destroy their reputation as a reliable provider (build up during the Cold War let us not forget!!) and they need Europe to counter-balance China. Putin is not this evil monster portrayed by the Western media and I am sad to see that so many people seem to have fallen for the Russo-phobic propaganda.

Maybe not but he is certainly no choirboy. Don't be surprised if he shuts off the gas just long enough to explain to the west who is in the drivers seat. Once that is done and he gets the price he wants it will flow readily enough as long as the west can pay for it in cash. Expect that price to be the BO equivalent of Brent.Lord Beria3 wrote:. We will see but just as the chances of Russian tanks rolling into eastern Ukraine is highly improbable, a Putin directed gas strike against Europe is also equally implausible.
Let me stress that Russia refusing to provide Ukraine with gas (which has not paid Russia its bills for a while yet) is perfectly rational and normal behaviour.
Of course, this will spark a new wave of Russophobic outrage in the western media.
I didn't say Putin is a choirboy... he is s authoritarian, nationalistic leader who ruthlessly follows Russian national interests. Apparently a crime these days.
