It's a bit of a silly pipe-dream towards techie-based BAU. It's not as if we've run out of roof space yet - and you don't need to make them strong enough to drive on when they're on a roof.

Conclusion: It will never happen.

Yes, it's a guess. But surely you don't need to be Einstein to work out that a road made of hexagonal solar panels made from recycled glass and various electronic components is going to cost several times more than a similar-sized lump of concrete/tarmac? One might argue that the long-term benefits would eventually mean it pays for itself, but who, in that case, provides the up-front investment??

The extraordinary thing is that some people actually took the solar freaking roadways video seriously, rather than as the joke it was. It demonstrates the propensity to believe what is convenient.
