Matches or lighters, long term

What changes can we make to our lives to deal with the economic and energy crises ahead? Have you already started making preparations? Got tips to share?

You can get them off eBay second hand (Stanley made one like the one in the pic) for about a tenner. Or, at least, you could a couple of years back when I got mine. All hand tools are rising in price on eBay of late I have noticed.

Thanks for the pointers on the hand drill. I can see that being a useful addition to the tool box, plus free fire starting!!!

Sorry but I've tried packing up the spare sparks but the envelope caught fire before I could post it :D

I also stand educated about paraffin lighters which I was sure I'd seen but, of course, was wrong....

I reckon a couple of Zippos and a good supply of flints plus metal cans with petrol. Once the petrol runs out you can run it on the "heads" and "tails" from your whisky still.

I've got matches, zippos/fuel/wicks/flints, disposable gas lighters, a fire steel and a magnifying glass. Wire wool and battery can work in an emergency too!

I bought the matches in bulk, maybe about 200 boxes per pack? Within each pack, they are plastic-wrapped in stacks of five boxes, so you don't have many loose boxes exposed to air at once. So far they are working perfectly over 3 years after purchase. So I think keeping them dry probably works.
