UK wind record

Can Wind Power meet the energy needs of Britain in the 21st century or is it just a lot of overblown hype?

Since the above was posted, the layout of the website has been altered.

Wind power is now on the same chart as coal, nuclear and CCGT, rather than being included on the chart with hydro, pumped storage and other small producers.

Wind power is now a major cource of UK electricity, remembering that actual production is greater than reported due to the many small grid tied turbines that are not metered in real time.

Pity he hasn't dropped the silly sentence about "subsidies are always paid". While true, it also applies (in shovelfuls) to nuclear power, whose insurance, security and disposal costs are underwritten regardless of output.

That web site is written and maintained by an anti-wind campaigner.

Talking of which, I am sorry to see than Earn Mearn's technically good web site is becoming a centre of wind power bashing, backed by dodgy correlations, incomplete data, and out and out prejudice. A clear example of confirmation bias, which , of course, is what plenty of people accuse sites like this of having.

While it's easy to read the actual figures, it does seem a shame different scales are used on the dials.

What do you mean by "confirmation bias" Ralph? Not an expression I've heard before.

Where there may be several possible interpretations available, a tendency to interpret data in a manner that confirms a preconceived bias.

Thanks. I kind of thought that, but you framed it in words better than I could have!

Not the UK wind record but...
In December, electricity from Denmark’s wind turbines corresponded to over half of Danes’ electricity consumption throughout the month at exactly 54.8%. Throughout 2013 wind power met a third of Denmark's electricity consumption at 33.2%

A pity we don't have a real time display like the Danes:

At present, electricity from wind is exceeding that from coal, a situation unknown until recently.
Over 10% from wind and under 10% from coal.

Wind power though nothing remarkable by winter standards is impressive for the time of year.

At present, wind is not only exceeding coal power but by a very substantial margin.
Coal is at 10.2% and wind at 15.3%, one and a half times as much.

I think that wind power may have set a new record for the time of year, though below records set in winter.

According to the web-page, wind speed up at our community turbine is currently 80 km/h. Brakes are on. Nothing being produced. :(

Not sure if this is due to the high wind speed, or another maintenance issue.

It must be maintenance because 50mph shouldn't be nearly enough to provide a risk to the turbine. I would've thought so anyway but :) .Does the webpage not give much details? Just interested.
