How about we add Man C who has ?100,000 cash in the bank and leaves it there and Man D who has ?100,000 cash and invests in gold.

Since I don't believe we will be living in a feudal system anytime soon, I think having some gold is useful. Think of it as an emergency fund, that also has a great investment potential.

Could be getting closer to a rise in gold - it's been meandering for some time, but worth keeping an eye on it now.

Yes, sure, but what is gold useful for? Dental work, OK, but what else? Shovels? Good heat conductivity for a fireplace, but it melts to easily. Take 100 infirm people over 80, give them a ton of gold each and leave them on a desert island. Will the gold keep them fed, warm and happy?

The idea of using noble metals as medium of exchange is probably one of the most stupid ideas ever concieved by mankind. Sheer folly.

I think the main point is the storage of wealth. Stupid of not people do buy and sell metals so they do have the use for people who wish to save up their money to, say, buy land. If not metals then what else?

As you have just said Isenhand, I think land is a very good way to store wealth. But Governments can take it off you, as they can with Gold too of course. Land may be harder to guard than gold, depending how much you have.

Mind you land is not quite as portable as gold.

Yeap, I think land would be the better of the two but it takes more money to get a decent size bit of land but the government taking the land would also be a bit of a problem. One solution would be to work together as a group so you can hold more land. More land and more people could make it harder for the government to take the land but then that didn?t help the church!

Maybe the best approach would be both?

Gold is a portable store of wealth that has been recognised as a form of wealth/money around the world for thousands of years, so why will it suddently stop being seen in that light because of an economic and societal breakdown, of which there have been many??? Personally I would rather have a couple of gold coins in my pocket than a shed full of razor blades or potatoes.

More seriously: There are around 600M firearms in the world, possibly 50% illegally held.

This is very roughly one illegally held firearm per every 5 young males, the usual owners of such toys.

If/when the SHTF do you expect Europe to be a haven of peace?

If 1 in 5 are carrying firearms, I want one too!

I may still end up dead in a ditch ... but I won't go quietly.

And, no, I'm NOT a "survivalist" or Mad Max fan ... just a realist.

It will be like South Africa: when getting ready to go to a restaurant for the evening, you check you have enough petrol, some cash, credit cards .. and your pistol.

The pistol will NOT guarantee you survive a mugging ... but NOT having a pistol will certainly seal your fate.

you must know the reasons why gold at least should back the means of exchange. any other means of exchange are just promises to pay and promises can be broken, there was little inflation during the gold standard which is good enough for me.
