Weird Weather

Post by Tarrel »

Overnight LOW of +14 degrees last night - in mid-December - in Northern Scotland! A large plume of very warm air being funneled up from the Cape Verde Islands apparently.

Is this basically normal but unusual, or is it a sign of something different I wonder?

Either way, it means the woodpile has stopped going down for a while. 8)

Yes, hardly any need for heating at the moment; 10°+ overnight recently plus Monday day was practically a scorcher!

Warmer air can hold more moisture. What goes up...

Well at least that's what you'd expect!

We do get the Foehn effect in our area, but I don't believe that's what is causing this particular condition, as it's also affecting the west coast. Just strong southerly winds I think.

Foehn effect is remarkable. The east coast of Aberdeenshire is particularly susceptible. In Calgary, Canada, they call the winds Chinooks, or "snow-melters". They're immediately east of the Rockies, and can experience a temperature uplift of upwards of 20 degrees in a matter of hours!
