Aye. I agree with you there actually. After my last debacle with banks (in 2008 funnily enough) I didn't want a bank account. But it can be difficult in the UK - I don't know about Ireland - but in Wales and England at least.. to get paid if you don't have a bank account.emordnilap wrote:As one who sees little point in bank accounts for the majority of private citizens, I say "well said Steve".stevecook172001 wrote:In a capitalist system with as little regulation as ours, ethical banking is an oxymoron
Unless you work for yourself and can get cash of course.

Yes. As far as I know, employees getting paid in cash is entirely at the discretion of employers. The legislation in Ireland, last time I looked, still allowed for a right to be paid cash at the employee's request but no doubt our regime will be changing that at some time.MrG wrote:But it can be difficult in the UK - I don't know about Ireland - but in Wales and England at least.. to get paid if you don't have a bank account.
One could always open a credit union account. Wages can be paid into there. It's one of the least worst options.

I lost my only bank debit card last week - probably dropped in the crush at the supermarket till. When I noticed 5 days later I dropped in the bank branch to have it cancelled and replaced. I was not too bothered by the delay as my wife's card on the joint account still worked.
Manager type very helpfully called me into the office to go through the process with me on her Windoze machine. First she cancelled the card - except she cancelled my wife's by mistake, right in front of my eyes. Neither of us blinked. Nothing she could do, transaction not reversible, interface had been confusing. We both carried on, she arranged a cash withdrawal, I informed wife. No point making a fuss.
Banks are pretty useless.
