Hmmm, good stuff.
It's worth fecking banks out of the window and using credit unions. The one I'm with has more on total deposit than it lends out in total (that's the way it should be); additionally the amount you can borrow depends upon how much you have deposited.
So, for a (say) €500 loan, you would be expected to have a couple of hundred on deposit which you cannot draw upon until the loan is paid off or at least is well below your deposit.
They're not the answer to everyone's needs but, I guess, most peoples'.
