We don't have an elected leader at the moment. We have an elected administration/management team. Even this election process appears to be losing its credibility.

The Queen is the closest thing we have to a national leader, elected or otherwise, and we do need leadership. Give me the Queen over Van Rompuy any day.

She doesn't actually do any leading. Her Christmas message is about all we get and I haven't watched that for many years so I'm not sure about even that. Charles tries to lead on sone issues but is not always successful.

"His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge".

They'll give him hell at Cubs. I guarantee a head down the loo and a right royal flushing on the first night.

Disagree. Leadership is an outcome as much as an activity. People can be led by a concept or an idea. Just look at religion. She doesn't have to do any "leading" in order to be a rallying point.

Is a rallying point the same as a leader? I think to be a leader you need to take people into new territory. The queen, person or institution, is a conservative entity, maintaining the status quo, rather than taking her subjects forward.

She is at the moment but my example about Victoria and her painkillers shows the potential. She really knocked the (til then widely-held) belief that they were somehow "sinful" on the head once and for all.

The nearest thing that the Royals are doing today is probably CharlieFarley with his Organic farming.

And today we learn that Duchy Originals sells Scottish water in the Middle East and organic ale in New Zealand, Bonkers and wrong.

But the biscuits are quite nice.
