Unless I've got something wrong, that article was written in 2003. Try to keep up.

'Monsanto will halt production of genetically modified corn in all of Europe, except Spain, Portugal and Czech republic. The agribusiness multinational states not to spend any more money on trials, development, marketing, court cases or anything else to get GM corn accepted in Europe'

There are plenty of other fish for them to fry in other parts of the world, without them worrying about Europe.

Level-headed piece here from Patrick Holden.
The recent news that the newly appointed UK Government Chief Scientist, Sir Mark Walport, has added his support to the growing number of politicians, pro-industry scientists and supermarkets who are accepting that GM crops should play a central role in the production of food for British consumers indicates that GMOs are ready to make a steady march into our food chain despite a growing body of research that questions their safety.

I’m not normally a conspiracy theorist – not least because I am mindful that it takes a huge amount of orchestration and cooperation to hoodwink the British public, who are thankfully suspicious of this kind of manoeuvre – but I do think there is some evidence of plotting by corporate multi-nationals in whose interest it is to promote the sale of GM crops. They have managed to persuade governments and the media that it would be backward, even luddite, not to include genetically engineered crops in the so called ‘tool box’ of food production as a means to address the challenges of climate change, resource depletion and food security. A cool look at the evidence, however, suggests otherwise.
Well worth reading the whole article.

The spin put out by toxicians immediately following Seralini's (see above article) discoveries is detailed here.
Writing in The Guardian at the end of September, John Vidal described the attacks already raining down on Seralini and his team as "a triumph for the scientific and corporate establishment which has used similar tactics to crush other scientists". These included, Vidal said, "Arpad Pusztai of the Rowett Institute in Scotland, who was sacked after his research suggested GM potatoes damaged the stomach lining and immune system of rats, and David Quist and Ignacio Chapela", who studied the flow of genes from illegally planted GM maize to Mexican indigenous maize.

Some mildly positive stories for a change, here and here.

A long, long way to go yet.

Taking the piss
Urine samples were collected from volunteers in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Macedonia, Malta, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and the UK. A total of 80/182 samples tested were found to contain glyphosate. Volunteers were all city-dwellers and included vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets. No two samples were tested from the same household. The samples were analysed by Dr Hoppe at Medical Laboratory Bremen in Germany.

This is a link to a large pdf "Myths and Truths about GMOs", complete with extensive references.

How does one get Owen Paterson to read and internalise this information?

You can do something.

You can take action: write to your MP saying you disagree with Owen Paterson and that evidence shows that he is wrong to push GM. Point out that research shows non-GM farming in the EU is more efficient and resilient than GM farming in the US.

You should explain that you are also concerned about the use of GM animal feed. This is mainly Roundup Ready soy, which is damaging monarch butterfly populations in the US and causing human and environmental devastation in Latin America. Say that you want meat, eggs, and dairy to be labelled to show whether it has been fed on GM or not so that you can have the choice of avoiding it.

You can write to the supermarkets - email addresses here. Say you are concerned about the use of GM animal feed. Point out that the head of Waitrose has said that there is plenty of non-GM soy and that the price difference of the meat and dairy is negligible, so the supermarkets should stop using that excuse and provide the products that we consumers want.

Do something before it's too late.

Thanks for the links. If anyone is in doubt about how important writing is (even if it is futile) then google "Owen Paterson GM crops". It is unnerving. My MP will now be greeted with a lengthy letter when opening his post today.

'kin hell!

"Genetically modified crops are "categorically" safer than conventional crops because they are subjected to much greater scrutiny than traditional varieties, the Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said today."

This is phuckwittery of the highest order. Either he's willing to lie through his teeth, or he knows nothing.

Share that letter, woodburner?

Bit of both I think; mainly the first.

In the fullness of time, look out for all the usual kickbacks for supporting climate change, gmos, fracking, etc etc that these corrupt bastards always get.

Letter to the editor
Daily Mail, 27 June 2013

Last year, I and scientists independent of the GM industry tried to meet UK government ministers and influential MPs and officials, including David Willetts and Lord Taylor of Holbeach after we’d heard that the ministers had met the GM industry lobby group ABC.

We wanted to put the other side of the story and proposed to present scientific evidence of proven hazards of GM crops, including toxic effects on laboratory animals fed GM crops, disappointing yields, and increased pesticide use.

We wrote to David Willetts’s office asking to meet him, explaining why we thought it was important. In reply his assistant diary manager told us ‘Unfortunately David’s diary is very full in the short term and so it will not be possible to arrange a meeting’.

It would seem that influential members of the British government aren’t interested in hearing the evidence against GM crops, but have plenty of time to listen to the GM industry and its lobbyists.

For members of the public who wish to read the evidence that Willetts doesn’t want to hear, it’s available in our report GMO Myths & Truths, available free online.
