Thatcher dies

I'm not sure how easy it would be to have a small funeral and no expense she was very popular with the right and this sort of hate figure with the looney left .
You would have to have quite a lot of policing to keep the loons from attacking her coffin I imagine and to stop them clashing with Thatcher supporters
This was always going to be a big funeral like Lady Di or Churchill

In the spirit of monetary de-regulation, perhaps we should all take out a pay-day loan to cover the costs?emordnilap wrote:Heh heh. I'm tempted to say her funeral's being nationalised - but in reality it's just the continuation of her policies, welfare for the rich.Aurora wrote:The Independent - 10/04/13
Taxpayers can 'well afford' to contribute to estimated £10m cost of Baroness Thatcher's funeral, says William Hague

I don't have a fundamental problem with this. It's undeniable that she was a huge influence, a once in a generation PM. I don't for a moment think Major, Blair, Brown or Cameron will get the same reaction on the death... A posh funeral once every few decades - yeah, we can stump up for that.
The Mirror is, of course, trying to score political points, rather than being objective.
Did Thatcher ever become mega-wealthy? I guess not as she didn't come from a wealthy background and didn't do much after leaving office. Was she one of the last leaders not to have massive personal wealth?

It's no. 10 at the moment!
Will be no. 1 by Sunday. Will be interesting to see if the BBC plays it.
I, like many others apparently, had already associated this song with the day she finally died. I knew it was going to be my song of that day. But until very recently, there were only two copies of the song on youtube, and both were ripped from the film. Since it happened a LOT more have appeared, and they are all about Maggie. Try typing "ding dong the witch is dead" into youtube.

You couldn't make up this sort of security threat, either. The funeral, I am talking about. People are comparing it to the funerals of Churchill and Diana, specifically in terms of security rather than more generally, but I think it is misleading comparison. Churchill and Diana were just important historically, but neither of them provoked such loathing in such a large number of people. Churchill was considered a hero by everybody (almost). Diana was adored by a large proportion of people, but very few people hated her. Even people who don't like the monarchy tended to have a bit of a soft spot for her, because of the way she made the rest of them look like a bunch of freaks. In neither case was there a serious threat of major disorder, or worse. This time there is. Millions of people in the UK would like nothing more than to see her funeral turned into a farce, and some people, including dissident Irish republicans, would go even further. I'm not sure they'd want to kill any bystanders, but they might, and they'd certainly blow up the coffin if they could.

A few days ago, I heard someone on the radio who should know, say that the cost hadn't been calculated. It would be interesting to know what makes up the £10m. Is it the additional cost over what the people and facilities involved would cost anyway if it wasn't happening? Or have costs that would be incurred anyway been allocated to it? If the argument is over numbers, we need to know how it's calculated.
Maybe it's a distraction from the bigger, to me, issue that she divided the country, and this big event has upset a lot of people. It's a nice day out for the ruling classes, in the part of the country that did pretty well during her time in office, and another example of how government is strongly London/South East England biased.
