My wife worked in primary health care when we lived in the South East, and is also an ante-natal teacher. She saw first-hand the increasing birth rate in the area caused by immigration. The Primary Care Trust's funding was largely based on birth rate, so it was a number they watched like hawks.
We had three large maternity units at hospitals within a 15 mile radius of where we lived. The annual number of births in just ONE of these hospitals exceeded that for the entire Scottish Highland and Islands region. That's pretty much everything north of Perth.

One of the fairly obvious things about immigrants is that they tend to be of child-bearing age. One should expect immigrants to have a higher fertility rate than the settled population, even if they come from cultures with similar overall fertility.
How many over 50s Polish people have come here recently? (I'm guessing Poland is well represented in your neck of the woods, Tarrel?)

Yes, both here in Scotland, and where we were before in Hampshire. In fact, I'm one of them! My Dad was Polish and came over at the end of WW2. Served as a soldier here until demobilisation. Married my Mother, who is English.biffvernon wrote:One of the fairly obvious things about immigrants is that they tend to be of child-bearing age. Not at the rate of nealry 300,000 people per annum (net of emigration) it hasn't!**(Although the last set of figures the rate was down to 200,000 thankfully!)biffvernon wrote:There you are, your dad migrated here and then had you. My mum did the same. It's been going on ever since the ice left.
And that's the point its the rate of migration (coupled with the higher birth rate) that's the issue not immigration per se
But I think you knew that already
** - Also the UK population is at a record high, as is the number of people per km2 and the population is also growing at the highest rate for 50 years!
