'Before Gas And TV' by Mark Knopfler (from the album 'Get Lucky')

Before gas and TV
Before people had cars
We'd sit round the fires
Pass around a guitar
Remembering songs
When my daddy was home
He'd play along
On the spoons and a comb

We'd go with the flow
When the weather was fine
Sometimes we'd go
Collecting scrap iron
Then we'd sit round the fires
Pass a bottle of wine
And the tales of the road
Since time out of mind

If heaven's like this
Well, that's okay with me
Where the living is fine
And living is free
If heaven's like this
Well, then here's where I'll be
On the edge of the field
On the edge of the world
Before gas and TV

Stuck On The Treadmill by Richard Thompson

Our money goes out, the bills come in
Round and round we go again
I come close but I never win
I'm stuck on the treadmill

Another day of punching steel
Till my arm's too numb to feel
Like a hamster on a wheel
I'm stuck on the treadmill

Wish I knew a better way
To keep myself alive
Shaking sheets of metal
Every day from 9 to 5
Others may be living
But me, I just survive
Me, I just survive

Machines screaming in my ear
Wasn't I just standing here?
I went to sleep, I grabbed a beer
Now I'm stuck on the treadmill

Me and the robot working away
He looks at me, as if to say
'I'll be doing your job someday'
I'm stuck on the treadmill

I wish I knew a better way
To keep myself alive
Shaking sheets of metal
Every day from 9 to 5
Others may be living
But me, I just survive
Me, I just survive

Jobs are going by the score
They're laying off a hundred more
20 years and they show you the door
I'm stuck on the treadmill

Strike's coming, trouble's brewing
Whole town's going to rack and ruin
Next year, what'll I be doing?
Stuck on the treadmill.

:D The lyrics:

You can tell yourself anything you like
Dreams are made of money
From your mortage down to your kid’s first bike
Dreams are made of money
When you’re in the red and you long for black
Dreams are made of money
When your head’s full of worry as you hit the sack
Dreams are made of money

Here’s the rainy day we’ve been spending for
Dreams are made of money
Now we’ve blown the loan and we still need more
Dreams are made of money
And we’re bailing out as the markets crash
Dreams are made of money
When we’re strapped to a parachute that’s made of cash
Dreams are made of money

Condemned, condemned, you can hear the cry
Dreams are made of money
While the placards wave and the banners fly
Dreams are made of money
Keep your CV handy and your hopes alive
Dreams are made of money
If you’re broke and you know it, wave your P45
Dreams are made of money

You can tell yourself anything you like
Dreams are made of money
From your mortage down to your kid’s first bike
Dreams are made of money
When you’re in the red and you long for black
Dreams are made of money
When your heads full of worry as you hit the sack
Dreams are made of money

Here's a ranty little pop number I made a little while back called Good Money, with some appropriate imagery attached. Not typical of my output, but I was in a bit of an angry mood... Can be downloaded for free - along with various other tracks - on my Soundcloud, should you so desire.

Cheers all. :)

GOOD MONEY
Sell the past for a pint of gold
Milk the future for trillions more
Keep the policy makers sweet
Cause all's fair in trade and war
Hail the genius of leverage
Sleight of hand, that's entertainment
White is black - it always was
Regulation's inefficient
You could make good money
You could make good money

Rake it in til the bubble bursts
Load the pain on the public purse
Stash it offshore out of sight
Tax is for the little guy
And welfare's SO last century
Workfare is the new tradition
Weep the tears of a crocodile
A proud salute to the City and Goldman
You could make good money
You could make good money

Debt creating your every whim
Debt everyone's pseudonym
Race us down to the ocean floor
The super-rich can always take more
Advertising how much you care
Advertising because you're worth it
Drug the kids and rob them blind
Curse the nerve of Occupy
With your good, good money
You could make good money

I want to know why it is that I've been hearing this olde classic in my head for days...
Brian May wrote: Oh oh people of the earth
Listen to the warning the seer he said
Beware the storm that gathers here
Listen to the wise man

I dreamed I saw on a moonlit stair
Spreading his hand on the multitude there
A man who cried for a love gone stale
And ice cold hearts of charity bare

I watched as fear took the old men's gaze
Hopes of the young in troubled graves
'I see no day' I heard him say
So grey is the face of every mortal

Oh oh people of the earth!
'Listen to the warning' the prophet he said
For soon the cold of night will fall
Summoned by your own hand

Ah ah children of the land
Quicken to the new life take my hand
Fly and find the new green bough
Return like the white dove

He told of death as a bone white haze
Taking the lost and the unloved babe
Late too late all the wretches run
These kings of beasts now counting their days

From mother's love is the son estranged
Married his own his precious gain
The earth will shake in two will break
And death all round will be your dowry

Oh oh people of the earth
Listen to the warning the seer he said
For those who hear and mark my words
Listen to the good plan

Oh oh oh oh and two by two my human zoo
They'll be running for to come
Running for to come out of the rain

Oh flee for your life
Who heed me not let all your treasure make you
Oh fear for your life
Deceive you not the fires of hell will take you
Should death await you

Ah people can you hear me?
And now I know
...
Now I know
The earth will shake in two will break
Death all around around around around
Around around around around
Now I know now I know
...
Listen to the wise listen to the wise listen to the wise
Listen to the wise listen to the wise man
La la...
ah
Listen to the man listen to the man listen to the man listen
to the mad man

God gave you grace to purge this place
And peace all around may be your fortune

Oh oh children of the land
Love is still the answer take my hand
The vision fades a voice I hear
Listen to the mad man!

But still I fear and still I dare not
Laugh at the mad man!
