If the US is the world's third largest producer of oil and they have to import oil as well, forgive me if I say there's something seriously wrong with such predictions.

These announcements are all about "corporate welfare", not energy policy.
And in any case how can a "ban" on fracking "end" when there was no legal or procedural instrument which prevented development (e.g. in Scotland they've been drilling for a while now). It was a verbal agreement with Cuadrilla, whose work was being held-up by local waste disposal problems in any case.
I've been watching a Yes Minister DVD this week. 30 years ago, the antics of politicians and senior civil servants seemed very funny, but doesn't seem so amusing now .

I'm hearing the same thing over and over. Nobody is making money from shale gas due to the gas glut. This is due to the success of shale gas as a cheap and plentiful energy source.
You will see a rebound of the american ecconomy this year and into the next 5 years due to this cheap energy. Transport companies are already converting their fleets to natral gas due to the fact that gas is 1/10th the price of oil for the same engery content.
We all know it wont last and it will probably destroy the planet but in the short term its looking rosy. Sit back and enjoy the ride as even if you get off it wont have any effect.
If the gas companies can stick it out until a shed load of gas power stations/gas powered trucks come on line to boost demand and knock the price up they will make it on the much higher gas prices. It the new demand doesn't kick in soon enough the oil cos will go bust. It's a game of Russian Roulette.
