Pirate Party

What can we do to change the minds of decision makers and people in general to actually do something about preparing for the forthcoming economic/energy crises (the ones after this one!)?

Die Piraten Partei seems to have done rather well, with 11% of the vote in recent German Elections.

In Britain they have a rather jolly flag:

Yet another drain on the votes for mainstream politicians.

As for file-sharing - that started when the compact cassette recorder became affordable to the masses in the mid seventies, and the music industry has been fighting a losing battle ever since.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

No British Government has been elected on a majority of the whole electorate since Stanley Baldwin in 1935. The last time Bliar was elected he did so with only a fifth of the public vote. Cameron would have got a quarter, but for the support of the LibDems (who got even less).

The issue that politics won't deal with is the fact that people don't vote because they have nothing to vote for -- and that means nothing they do has popular legitimacy.

I think it makes no real difference at all -- especially their proposals for "e democracy" which centralise power in network providers/the media rather than distributing it to local people.

It's a shame one of the pictures on their front page shows a placard calling for 'jobs, growth, justice'. This is them endorsing growth, which we all know is finished.

Sorry to be picky but the devil is in the details.

Surely pirates are fugitives from justice, and you couldn't call what they do a proper job. I guess that growth is good for them though, as it creates more stuff for them to steal!

I noticed that. It's why I haven't joined. I want to join a Truthful Party.

That's a bit harsh, it's just an image of dissatisfaction.

Try entering into a debate about growth with them, and even if right now the party thinks it's possible to have infinite growth (I don't think this is the case for the most prominant members) it doesn't mean they are being untruthful, just wrong.
