I am currently researching this for my house at present. Try googling the above subject. You need to know rainfall data (monthly or annual) for your location and the size of your collection area (roof). You also need an estimate of the water consumption in your household. I find that the figure of 150 litres/ day/ person that is often repeated is far too high, and you should have a go at working it out for yourself. Using a spreadsheet for all this data is useful. You can then calculate the volume of rainfall you are likely to collect, taking account of various efficiency factors. Then you select the size of tank you need.
Pre-filtration of rainwater is essential before the water is stored. Untreated water can be pumped from the tank and used for other than drinking water. It can be further treated by UV sterilisation to meet water quality regulations.
All this equipment is available from several suppliers in the UK that can be found on the internet.
how to get, keep and purify rain water?
