To get back to the OP, there are 2000 drivers involved in the potential strike, the services have only 60 who are suitably trained and certified to deliver to forecourts. (Ref: Private Eye). Bit of a shortfall?

Press reports suggest that the trades union find the latest offer unsatisfactory, and a strike is still likely, perhaps causing shortages over the Jubillee holiday weekend.

The delay has allowed time to train more military drivers, it is reported that well over half the normal fuel volumes could be supplied thus.

Plans exist to deliver more fuel by rail, mainly fuel for railway use, but in some cases also for other purposes.

Hopefully any dispute wont coincide with any natural gas panic !
Many natural gas power stations can burn light oil as a short term measure, but this usually has to be delivered by road.

Any shortages resulting from a strike might affect the olympics, which could prove interesting !

They should shift more of it to rail delivery permanently.

They used to have a pipeline from Coryton to Norfolk. They made a decision to put it into road tankers instead. :roll:

To show just how messed up our leaders are. The railways have their fuel delivered to railside bunkers by ROAD as it's cheaper. The same reason you see so many railway carriages and even engines on low loaders at the front of a congested motorway. :?
